POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is in the State Government Affairs – West organization and will be focused on state-level government affairs in Sacramento, CA.  The primary focus is on advocacy in legislature, but also includes the Executive branch and relevant agencies.  In addition, the position will support some limited local government advocacy in Northern CA.  The position will work closely with internal business unit clients to determine the impact of policies and legislation to the respective organizations and develop appropriate responsive strategies. A significant amount of the role is working within industry and business associations, and within coalition activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages all aspects of MPC’s (including subsidiaries and related companies) government affairs activities at state level and local level, as applicable, including advocacy development and political strategy development.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with executive branch officials, legislators, other relevant state and local officials and their respective staff.
  • Identifies potentially impactful proposed bills and policy positions, works with relevant business units and senior management as warranted to determine their impact to the organization and develops responsive strategy.
  • Directly advocates on behalf of MPC’s interests with executive branch officials and legislators to advance the company’s government and public affairs interests.
  • Promotes effective relationships with industry/trade, consumer and professional groups.
  • Assists with permitting issues as needed and serves on project teams to manage communications with elected officials and other governmental stakeholders.
  • Manages state contributions and lobbying reporting filings in compliance with state and federal regulations, including assessing qualification of corporate activities and expenditures.
  • In coordination with the Law Organization, keeps current with relevant lobbying and ethics requirements and monitors developments and changes.
  • Participates on the Corporate Emergency Response Team (CERT) in the Liaison Support role.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum of eight years of corporate, government or public affairs experience; experience in the energy industry strongly preferred

 

SKILLS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; problem-solving, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills, including ability to interact professionally with external stakeholders and internally at all organizational levels.

 

TRAVEL:

  • Up to 20%
