Government Affairs & PAC Manager
Position Description: The Government Affairs & PAC Manager provides advocacy and policy support to the Department of Government Affairs and Clinical Practice. The Government Affairs department is responsible for advocating on behalf of AACAP’s public policy priorities at the federal and state levels through direct and grassroots lobbying, policy development, and coalition building. The Government Affairs department also supports AACAP’s delegation to the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates and the AACAP-PAC.
The Government Affairs and PAC Manager will focus on tracking and reporting on federal and state policy related to pediatric mental health care, communication support for AACAP member and staff advocacy initiatives, policy development support, AACAP-PAC management support and AACAP advocacy member communications. The Government Affairs and PAC Manager will also represent AACAP at external meetings including Hill meetings, Hill and federal agency briefings, coalition meetings, and PAC fundraisers, at the behest of the Deputy Director of Federal Affairs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Track and analyze federal and state regulatory and legislative initiatives pertaining to AACAP policy priorities.
- Plan and implement annual federal legislative conference, including meeting. scheduling, promotions and material development and dissemination, with Deputy Director of Federal Affairs.
- Manage federal and state action alert communications via grassroots advocacy tool VoterVoice.
- Provide staff liaison support to select AACAP member committees including the AACAP-PAC Board of Directors and AACAP delegation to the AMA House of Delegates.
- Support AACAP-PAC fundraising events, including the development of member-facing promotional and educational materials, member appeals and contribution acknowledgement.
- Represent the Association at political events, as assigned.
- File the AACAP and Individual Lobbying and Contribution Reports on a quarterly and bi-yearly basis as mandated by law.
- Draft bi-weekly Advocacy Update member emails.
- Coordinate with Communications Department on advocacy and policy-related communications, including web updates and social media content.
- Attend and report on policy meetings, hearings, and conferences, as assigned.
- Attend annual AACAP meeting (requires travel).
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a concentration in health policy, political science, or public health.
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in health care policy development and advocacy.
- Congressional and/or state policy work experience preferred.
- Political action campaign management experience preferred.
- Nonprofit medical/scientific association experience preferred.
- Innovative, creative self-starter with excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, detail oriented, organized, able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-moving environment.
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, team-oriented, hands-on environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, social media platforms and internet research
- Ability to work independently as well as with other staff members, and to meet deadlines
