To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

The Waymo Policy and Government Affairs team has a front seat in this exciting moment in the evolution of autonomous driving technology, transportation and tech policy. Successful navigation of the policy landscape is critically important to deploying and scaling our business. Our team works directly with policymakers and third party groups at the national, state and local levels to help advance transportation policy, educate on the safety benefits of the technology, and advance consumer awareness and acceptance. Internally, our efforts support the innovative work of engineering, product, strategy, and partnerships teams, and we work closely with highly-skilled legal and safety experts.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Develop and manage relationships with government officials, relevant agencies and regulators, community leaders and community groups  in San Francisco and other relevant jurisdictions in California on Waymo’s behalf
  • Work in lockstep with the Policy Development and Regulatory Affairs Manager to co-create and manage the advocacy campaigns needed to ultimately ensure Waymo is successful in meeting our business objectives in SF
  • Cultivate hyper-local community champions to support Waymo
  • Bring relevant external information and understanding to internal planning and decision making processes
  • Represent Waymo at external events and in meetings with city leaders/decision makers
  • Lead events, such as community town halls/forums, local community events w/neighborhood groups/nonprofits
  • With support from Public Affairs & City Policy, translate Waymo goals into a local community strategy working closely with grassroots stakeholders
  • Manage team of Waymonaut volunteers and community ambassadors in planning and execution of local Bay Area events
  • Manage concerns at the neighborhood level and work cross functionally across teams to address concerns
  • This role will be primarily San Francisco focused, but the scope will sometimes expand to cover other jurisdictions
  • Maintain relationships with decision makers and the community at large in Santa Clara County, where Waymo is headquartered

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • Optimism, confidence, and humility
  • An appetite to learn a lot and work very hard
  • A deep, diverse political network in San Francisco that reaches from community groups to senior decision makers
  • A very strong understanding of the processes and dynamics in SF politics
  • A solid understanding of the regulatory and legislative environment related to transportation and technology
  • A genuine comfort with working in ever-changing conditions where you will need to chart your own course to reach our business goals
  • Humble and ambitious; willing to do things that are both above and below your current level of experience
  • Highly collaborative
  • A capable public speaker
  • The ability to travel within the region on a very regular basis, as soon as COVID conditions allow

It’s preferred if you have:

  • A minimum of seven years of experience working with the public in San Francisco
  • Some experience working in the public sector
  • A network in Sacramento, the broader Bay Area, and among city transportation leaders throughout the country
  • The ability to travel nationally occasionally
  • Speak a language in addition to English, ideally Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese
