The Irrigation Association is seeking a government and public affairs director in our Fairfax, Virginia, office. The Irrigation Association team is a hardworking group that serves the irrigation industry by promoting efficient irrigation through advocacy and professional development. This position is the lead staff member for the IA’s advocacy strategic initiative. In addition to serving as the chief lobbyist of the IA, this position requires strong written and public speaking skills, as well as acumen in public affairs strategy development and implementation. 


As part of the leadership team for this $4 million organization, this person will be engaged in a broad range of activities in addition to advocacy including professional development, strategic planning and communicating with stakeholder groups both within and outside of the industry. The government and public affairs director will report to the chief executive officer.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Execute IA’s state and federal legislative and regulatory strategy.
  • Monitor and report on state and federal legislation and regulations.
  • Manage industry’s participation in standards and code development.
  • Tell the irrigation industry’s story through developing and managing public affairs campaigns and messaging.
  • Research and draft briefings, policies and model legislation and codes on issues that impact the irrigation industry.
  • Plan and implement an annual Washington D.C. fly-in, as well as local advocacy efforts.
  • Manage volunteer committees as assigned.
  • Serve as a spokesperson on behalf of the IA, including development of presentations, building digital and in-person conferences/events, and writing articles for trade journals and magazines.
  • Drive messaging for the irrigation industry through the IA’s Smart Irrigation Month campaign, social media presence and other public relations opportunities.
  • Work with industry leaders to develop strategic plans for the future growth of the industry, including observing trends that affect the industry and plans for responding or embracing.


What we’re looking for: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher 
  • Seven to 10 years of relevant experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communications as well as organizational skills 
  • Skilled in MS Office products
  • An innovative and complex thinker
  • A team player who is willing to help in any area when needed
  • Knowledge of the agriculture or green industry a plus


Other expectations: 

  • Travel approximately 20% of the time, throughout the U.S.
  • Travel to the Irrigation Show (one week per year, November or December)
  • Full time, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
