The Office of Government Relations manages W&M’s federal and state government relations, assisting the president, provost, deans and senior management in the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the university’s federal and state government relations programs and institutional legislative priorities. This office is central to researching policy issues, organizing activities and meetings, responding to information requests and serving as a primary point of contact with internal and external constituencies to support government relations objectives.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director of Government Relations, the Government Relations Coordinator will work collaboratively to accomplish the objectives of the unit. Duties will include supporting the work of the Executive Director in the execution of the institution’s federal and state government relations efforts. This will include working and building relationships with other offices on campus and those in state and federal legislative and agency offices, as well as national higher education organizations; tracking and researching legislative and policy issues and producing materials in support of the institution’s positions and priorities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or comparable education/experience.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to a variety of external and internal audiences.
Knowledge of Virginia state government and the Virginia General Assembly.
Demonstrated knowledge of standard office procedures and administration.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in public policy, political science, public relations or related field
Master’s degree preferred
Some experience with state government, federal government, and/or government relations;
Experience with higher education
Knowledge of William & Mary mission, vision, business and administrative practices preferred.

Conditions of Employment:
This position will be based in our Richmond, Virginia Office. Travel to/from the Williamsburg, VA campus may be necessary.
This position may require work outside of the normal business hours to meet the needs of the office.
