The Alliance for International Exchange is looking for a dynamic and creative Government Relations professional to help execute all of the Alliance’s advocacy efforts. The Alliance is an association of organizations and serves as the only collective public policy voice of the exchange community in the United States. The Government Relations professional supports the work of the Alliance both internally and externally. S/he reports to the Executive Director and works closely with other staff members, Alliance members, and external consultants on a variety of projects, primarily focused on congressional engagement.  

The Government Relations professional: 

  • Primarily focuses on advancing Alliance priorities in Congress, interacts directly with congressional staff, and supports the Executive Director in his congressional engagement 
  • Coordinates with external consultants and Alliance members on advocacy efforts 
  • Serves as a liaison with congressional offices and develops new relationships and cultivates existing ones through meetings, briefings, and events 
  • Supports congressional sign-on letters and other advocacy efforts  
  • Organizes advocacy “fly-in” days and other congressional meetings, including event logistics and the development of materials 
  • Is principally responsible for supporting the Congressional International Exchange and Study Caucus, including through a monthly exchanges newsletter, briefings, and other events 
  • Coordinates with public affairs staff on grassroots and coalition engagement in states and congressional districts 
  • Works in concert with the Executive Director to engage the Department of State, including drafting and/or reviewing comments to regulations, attending and facilitating meetings, and developing relationships with State Department staff 
  • Supports the Alliance Annual Conference by developing sessions, serving on the conference committee, and helping with event logistics 
  • Acts as Alliance representative and/or speaker at a variety of industry and member events, conferences, and trainings 

Seeking a professional with seven years of advocacy, government relations, and/or legislative experience, who has strong writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills. Previous work in the U.S. Congress is strongly preferred. Experience with associations and/or coalitions is a plus, as is knowledge of and personal experience with international affairs and exchange programs. Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred.
