A critical component to the mission of the organization is around volunteer activism. With the age of digital engagement, the Grassroots Advocacy Manager will help engage in digital advocacy efforts around mission-centered campaigns. This individual will support Markets and connect OGA policy priorities to grassroots efforts.
The Manager will foster and cultivate relationships with mission impacted families, other national and state organizations, federal, state and local government officials, government agencies, and the general public. Specifically, this position will work to grow the grassroots advocacy community ensuring advocates have an opportunity to be heard in both state and federal government.
This position will be responsible the direction and overall management of the Grassroots and Grasstops database to create an informed and engaged pool of advocates. This position will be managing positions on legislation, coordinating action alerts, and providing legislative updates through mass emails, Twitter and Facebook.
Work cross-functionally with other departments and staff to include Volunteer Engagement, Maternal Infant Health Directors, and local markets on the recruitment of grassroots advocates, and cultivation and engagement of grasstops advocates within local market
Coordinate all Community Advocacy efforts; ensure March of Dimes mission is communicated effectively and supported by broad efforts to influence political action that builds movement to support priority issues, and mobilize mission impacted and concerned citizens
Work with MarComms on Social Media and other digital posts regarding advocacy activities; use social media and website to communicate information on issues and opportunities to increase and facilitate activism
Draft Action Alerts in conjunction with input from the federal and state Office of Governemnt Affairs teams
Provide training for community stakeholder groups on key priority issues
Create presentations on relevant advocacy issues to maintain and cultivate grasstops and grassroots engagement in conjunction with Grassroots Advocacy Managers
Maintain the March of Dimes Advocacy Network and provide regular updates regarding federal and state advocacy efforts and tracks success (#of click throughs / # of actions taken)
Engage in calls / meetings with Market / Office of Government Affairs / Mission / Volunteer Leadership as needed to update on activities, discuss advocacy and government affairs at the local level, identify areas of growth, assess opportunities for advocacy event(s)
Generate monthly advocacy report for Office of Government Affairs / Senior Executive Director/ Executive Director for use at Board Meetings
Increase @MODAdvocacy engagement
Manage coalition relationships
Plan and execute advocacy events
Work cross-functionally with March of Dimes business partners such as programs, fundraising, communications, and market staff to ensure Advocacy and Government Affairs is fully integrated into day to day business and all team members are knowledgeable and well-informed on state policy priorities. Develop successful working relationships with internal staff in all functional areas, and demonstrate a thorough understanding of functional roles and goals. Identify ways to contribute and support goals and objectives set for colleagues in the local market/state(s).
Identify, research, and engage potential funding sources to support advocacy work and where applicable, collective impact work.
Work with market team members to translate and share grasstops advocacy work in ways that invite donor investment and supporter engagement.
5-7 years experience
Four year college degree or equivalent experience
Master of Arts in Political Science or related field, a plus
Experience creating digital/social media messaging from an advocacy viewpoint
Experience running issue or candidate campaigns on the state or federal level
Experience working and developing grassroots databases and campaigns
Understanding of maternal health issues specifically or an established knowledge of a specific healthcare industry
Coalition advocacy experience is a plus
Synthesize complex issues, complete work with short turnaround times, handle multiple projects simultaneously, curious and collaborative
