The Vice President and Head of Corporate & Government Relations USA (USA Hub) will be an integral member of the Corporate Affairs (CA) Leadership team. S/he will have a broad network in the Washington policy and legislative environment.

 

Experience in corporate tax, appropriations, trade, intellectual property, chemical, environmental and data policy and regulation, as well as relationships with executive branch organizations such as EPA, USTR, Treasury, and relevant committees on Capitol Hillare highly desirable.

Directly reporting to the global Head of Corporate Affairs in Darmstadt, Germany, s/he will drive policy and political priorities with the U.S. federal government and at the state and local level.

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Work with the three CA Business Partners and local colleagues in the business sectors to develop, and execute the USA Hub strategic and annual priorities to advance the company´s policy objectives with the U.S. federal government and state and local levels; leverage policy opportunities and manage risks
  • Execute Corporate Affairs Strategy as leader of the US Hub
  • Serve on the Corporate Affairs Leadership Team and Key Account and Business Initiative Council
  • Serve on the U.S. Country Council and advise country council members on policy and political developments
  • Lead and engage a team of Corporate and governments Affairs professionals
  • Build and leverage relationships with members of Congress and other stakeholders influential in shaping the federal and state policy and political environment
  • Shape our company´s business environment by building and leveraging thought leadership in selected business areas
  • Monitor and apprise the company of relevant external developments and trends in the federal and state political environment
  • Support Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany leadership engagement with federal and state government officials and other relevant stakeholders
  • Connect with federal and state government officials and political stakeholders and trade associations in the United States and build and maintain a network of relationships in federal and state political communities
  • Cultivate and analyze intelligence relating to risks and opportunities in the external environment, and advise internal teams accordinglyWho you are: minimum requirements; Bachelor’s degree is required. 12 years of Government Affairs experience in Washington D.C.  5 years’ experience in leading and engaging teams and driving results both in government organizations and industry, experience in working in a matrix organization, strong understanding of federal legislative process and interplay with executive branch policymaking, strong understanding of political context in which the life science, semiconductor, digital and/or chemical industries operate, experience leading or working with industry partners to advance common goals at the federal and state levels, strong understanding of policy areas impacting the life science, the chemical and/or semiconductor industries, strong network of relationships in Congress, the executive branch, key trade associations, and other stakeholders that shape the federal and state political and policy environment. Ability to develop and execute strategic and tactical plans to advance policy goals. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following competencies: excellent leadership and collaboration skills and the ability to work and succeed in a matrix organization, excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to make complex concepts conversational, excellent organizational and analytical skills as well as business acumen; ability to consider, analyze and advise on a broad range of factors such as policies, practices and trends.

    Preferred requirements; Bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree in economics, government, law or a similar field is preferred. 12 years of Government Affairs experience in Washington D.C.  5 years’ experience in leading and engaging teams and driving results both in government organizations and industry, experience in working in a matrix organization, strong understanding of federal legislative process and interplay with executive branch policymaking, strong understanding of political context in which the life science, semiconductor, digital and/or chemical industries operate, experience leading or working with industry partners to advance common goals at the federal and state levels, strong understanding of policy areas impacting the life science, the chemical and/or semiconductor industries, strong network of relationships in Congress, the executive branch, key trade associations, and other stakeholders that shape the federal and state political and policy environment.
