Position Description

The Head of External Affairs NA will lead and develop ZF external affairs (government relations) in North America. This role will monitor and engage in regulatory and political developments in relevant policy fields (including road safety, fuel economy, trade policy) The position will rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Position Requirements

  • Develop external affairs strategy towards government departments, industry associations and key decision-makers, and coordinate other ZF staff involved in such activities
  • Support ZF business in North America through up-to-date political intelligence gathering
  • Gain early insights into future regulatory developments and inform divisions in structured ways, while working closely with central functions (including engineering, product planning, legal, communications…)
  • Strengthen ZF representation in industry associations, both personally and by managing other ZF colleagues active in associations
  • Develop company positions in close cooperation with divisions and central functions
  • Prepare briefing documents for members of the ZF board involved in association / political outreach
  • Promote ZF business interests by pushing for a supportive regulatory framework
  • Coordinate and submit official responses to governmental requests for comment
  • Strengthen network with decision-makers and other stakeholders so as to promote ZF interests and position ZF as a trusted industry expert
  • Improve information exchange with external affairs colleagues in other world-regions

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills to work and coordinate with a wide array of coworkers across divisions
  • Ability to forge long-term relationships with regulators and industry experts
  • Expertise in assessing the market for future products, as well as potential business opportunities and threats that are posed by emerging regulations and other key market drivers
  • Experience of 5-10 years; familiarity with political and regulatory processes as well as association management
  • Established network with industry regulators a definite plus, as is proven track record in technical regulation areas such as vehicle safety and/or emissions legislation
  • Strong business acumen along with effective drafting and presentation skills
  • Solid technical understanding and strong ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to travel regularly to Washington D.C. or other US domestic locations

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Background with interface technology-association-politics or technology strategy preferred
  • Experience in the automotive industry preferred
  • German and/or Spanish language skills a plus
