ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Health Policy Coordinator assists the Vice President, Reimbursement and Professional Advocacy in implementing AAPAs strategic advocacy efforts regarding reimbursement issues for medical and surgical services delivered by PAs. The position provides support and assistance to PAs, PA constituent organizations, physicians, hospitals, practice administrators and other stakeholders in dealing with reimbursement and coverage policies related to PA practice.

In addition, the Health Policy Coordinator will support the development and execution of the Academy’s efforts to enhance the positioning of PAs in the transition to a value-based healthcare system at both the state and federal levels. The overarching goal of these efforts is to achieve optimal PA practice in all aspects of healthcare delivery with an emphasis on fully integrating PAs into current and emerging care delivery models.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and analyze laws, regulations and policies pertaining to public (Medicare, Medicaid) and commercial health insurance companies regarding their impact on PA practice
  • Research relevant payer reimbursement policies and related health policy issues, including value-based care models, telehealth and electronic health records, to determine advocacy opportunities and develop strategies
  • Interact with PAs, PA constituent organizations, health plans, healthcare systems to obtain information to support PA utilization, productivity and practice efficiency
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding reimbursement and related payment and health policies and issues
  • Draft/edit AAPA reimbursement publications including the Essential Guide to PA Reimbursement, website content, policy issue briefs and other public facing materials
  • Perform other duties as assigned

ABOUT THE ADVOCACY TEAM

AAPA’s advocacy and government relations department works to advance the priorities of the organization and promote policies that improve the ability of PAs to practice at the top of their education and experience. The department is divided into three teams; State Advocacy and Outreach (SAO), Federal Advocacy, and Reimbursement and Professional Advocacy which all report to the Senior Vice President, Advocacy and Government Relations. Together, these teams manage external advocacy on behalf of the organization and conduct work that is vital to the profession. The department has nineteen staff members, with a wide scope of expertise but a shared dedication to excellence. Most team members have a background in law, health policy or government service.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in health policy, public policy or related field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented with outstanding organizational skills
  • Strong commitment to teamwork
  • Experience in health policy preferred, but not required
  • Position is DC-based and will require attendance at meetings in the Washington, DC region
  • Position is not required to have regular onsite office hours

IMPACT OF COVID-19 and REMOTE WORK OPTIONS

Due to considerations regarding COVID-19, AAPA has been operating remotely since March 2020 and plans to continue to have staff telework for the foreseeable future. Moving forward, AAPA will transition to offer both hybrid and fully remote work arrangements to staff. This position is not required to have regular onsite office hours, but must be locally based in the DC metro area and able/willing to attend in person meetings representing the academy, as well as occasionally travel on-site and to annual conference.
