The AAMC seeks a Lead Public Affairs Specialist to join or team. As a member of the AAMC Public Affairs team, you will support the strategic direction behind communications for the association’s legislative and regulatory priorities, including issues like support for NIH-funded research, graduate medical education, and patient access to care. Additional projects include media and communications efforts around AAMC research that support the association’s strategic and advocacy priorities.
The Lead Specialist will handle assignments related to the organization’s communications and public affairs programs and develop campaigns based on knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process and environment and on the association’s advocacy priorities. In this role, you will be responsible for developing strategic communications plans and for sharing AAMC reports and programs with key audiences, including policymakers, allied organizations, the media, and internal stakeholders. You will craft messaging for a variety of audiences and prepare and deliver information concerning the organization’s advocacy efforts to gain understanding and acceptance for the organization’s priorities.
How will you make an impact?
- Lead, develop and implement strategic communications plans for the organization’s advocacy priorities, including crafting messages
- Develop press statements, one-pagers, talking points, web-copy, reports, and other communications collateral. This includes collaborating closely with colleagues in other work units within communications and mission-focused clusters, such as Government Relations, Health Care Affairs, and Scientific Affairs.
- Coordinate development and upkeep of the association’s over-arching public affairs collateral, including infographics and web content
- Other duties as assigned – These are the additional duties and projects that may come up on an ad hoc basis that support the AAMC’s legislative and regulatory efforts
What will you bring to the role?
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as journalism, English, communications, or political science/public policy.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in public relations or public affair with association or agency experience preferred and prior experience in health care, research, or education helpful.
- Experience with project management with exceptional written and oral communications skills
- Knowledge of and experience with the political process.
- Must be a creative, self-starter with demonstrated ability to work independently with colleagues and constituents at all levels
- Should be comfortable with translating complex issues, research, and data for Capitol Hill and lay audiences
- Computer skills including all applications within Microsoft Office Suite.
If a bachelor’s degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions. One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
