Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF or Federation) is America’s largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organization with 52 state and territorial affiliates and more than six million members and supporters, including hunters, anglers, gardeners, birders, hikers, campers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. NWF’s National Advocacy Center (NAC), located in DC, is searching for a Legislative Coordinator to join our team. The NAC serves as the epicenter of the National Wildlife Federation’s national campaign work. By bringing lobbying, policy and legal expertise together with grassroots, online outreach, and communications specialists, the NAC is able to help mobilize NWF assets to address the most pressing wildlife conservation challenges.
The Legislative Coordinator will primarily support the Associate Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs and the Senior Manager of Government Affairs, who are charged with leading the planning, development, and execution of engagement with Congress and the executive branch to educate, advise, and advocate for NWF’s interests and policy priorities. Communication of NWF’s interests is guided by goals and milestones laid out in the Strategic Plan, and the recommendations of NWF program, regional, and senior staff.
In this role you will:
- Collaborate with and support the federal policy lobby team and NWF staff as needed to further key legislative goals and priorities
- Assist the AVP and Senior Manager of Government Affairs in monitoring cross-cutting policy issues, included but not limited to appropriations, infrastructure, and the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act
- Engage in direct advocacy to congressional staff through meetings, phone calls, and emails
- Track relevant floor votes, committee mark-ups, and hearings
- Develop weekly Legislative Updates to convey recent congressional activity and send to all NWF staff nationwide
- Represent the interests of NWF at key conservation community and other coalition meetings, as needed
- Manage NWF’s congressional database (Congress Plus) and serve as lead on coordinating electronic communications through database to Capitol Hill
- Conduct research on key issues, including voting records of members of Congress
- Prepare advocacy materials including fact sheets and official NWF letters
- Develop content for web, action alerts, and legislative updates
- Provide support for special lobby days such as fly-ins, and other special events
- Set up meetings with Members of Congress and Administration officials for NWF’s CEO, Board members and senior staff
- Assist the Office of the General Counsel with quarterly LD-2 submission
- Coordinate across the organization to aid in the creation of NWF’s National Policy Agenda, used to guide legislative priorities in Congress
- A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in environmental policy, political science, or a related field.
- A candidate should have at least 1-2 years professional experience (preferably working in or advocating for conservation issues).
- A candidate should have an understanding of politics, Congressional procedure, and legislative and executive advocacy.
- A candidate must possess superior organizational skills and be detail oriented, with strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- A candidate should have excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, as well the ability to multitask. Candidates should also prioritize collegiality, and function in an exemplary manner in the servant-leader tradition of NWF’s mission.
Due to the COVID pandemic, travel will be restricted. If/when it is deemed safe to travel, there may be some occasional travel.

The National Wildlife Federation closely follows the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease and has implemented processes that promote the safety of our employees, candidates, and communities. We are currently starting our positions as remote, but will transition to onsite work when our offices re-open, expected to be in early 2022. Compensation and Benefits:
This position pays $45,000 – $50,000 (commensurate with experience and skill set).
