We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Washington D.C. for a Lobbyist- Federal Affairs on our Advocacy team.

As a part of the team, you will maintain effective liaison with designated federal agencies, health care organizations, and coalitions involved with health-related programs. Ensure AMA policies and positions are brought to the attention of appropriate government officials and related health care associations and coalitions. Ensure relevant information on government programs and coalition activities is brought to the attention of appropriate AMA officials.

RESPONSIBILITES:

Develop and communicate documents influencing healthcare policies adopted by federal agencies

Identify and analyze emerging issues in proposed federal healthcare policy, including priority in terms of the AMA Advocacy objectives and their alignment with the administration’s interests
Develop key issue objectives and communication plans to address those topics, collaborating across Advocacy and the AMA to develop messaging to policymakers, stakeholders, and others
Develop thoughtful and thorough comment letters influencing policies adopted by the executive branch of the federal government, based on analysis of current and proposed healthcare regulations
Engage policymakers to clarify or refine AMA comments, ensuring comments are incorporated to policies
Assist with development of targeted web and social media education and advocacy opportunities
Manage relationships with policymakers and stakeholders

Initiate and maintain liaison with appropriate administration officials and health professional organizations in Washington to promote regulatory agenda
Advocate AMA positions to stakeholders and federal officials, and relay information back to the AMA
Liaise with external organizations including identifying potential stakeholders and arranging conference participants and speakers
Brief stakeholders, AMA leadership, and Advocacy colleagues on priorities for federal advocacy

Monitor federal regulatory activities and ongoing activities of various federal programs
Prepare briefings for leaders representing the AMA in official meetings
Lead coalition meetings and make public presentations on behalf of the AMA, as appropriate
As subject matter expert, advise on regulatory proposals; educate AMA colleagues and others about Medicare policies and other issues of interest to patients and physicians
Provides, guides, and uses professional concepts in developing resolutions to critical issues
Applies existing AMA Principles and Policy in the development of new ideas and assist AMA business unit understanding of federal policymaking and legislative and regulatory implications
May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate degree required; Law degree or master’s degree preferred in Public Health, Business or Political Science
5+ years’ experience working with member of Congress, Federal agencies, consulting firm, or with national medical specialty societies on federal government health issues
Expertise regarding HIPAA, Medicare and 42 CFR Part 2 legislation and regulation is required
Expertise regarding the social, political, and practical contexts of health data privacy and cyber security of data exchanged outside of the HIPAA context is strongly preferred
Expertise in HIPAA administrative simplification and health insurer prior authorization
Demonstrated record of strong teamwork and collaborative skillset, particularly in strategic initiatives
Excellent interpersonal skills crucial for success, including relationship building and maintenance skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills
A keen ability to assimilate and produce content relevant to health IT / digital health policy
An understanding of the role standards development organizations (e.g., HL7) play in health care
Solid familiarity with emerging or novel digital health initiatives and health policy priorities, e.g., application programming interfaces (APIs), information blocking rules, augmented intelligence
AMA’s safety and policy protocols require proof of vaccination against COVID19 for employment at AMA. Employees may apply for a religious or medical exemption from getting the vaccine.
