The American Academy of Ophthalmology is seeking a highly accomplished communications professional to serve as its Manager for Advocacy Communications, based in its Washington, D.C. office. Reporting to the Vice President for Communications & Marketing, this communications leader will exclusively support the work of the Governmental Affairs Division, while serving as a liaison between the Academy’s D.C. office and the San Francisco headquarters-based Communications & Marketing division.  The Manager of Advocacy Communications is as strategic partner to the governmental affairs team leading the effort to effectively communicate the Academy’s legislative and policy priorities in a manner that informs and engages its member physicians and surgeons. The ideal candidate for this critical role will be a prolific storyteller who skillfully applies journalism principles and web writing best practices to create content that resonates with key audiences.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop long-term strategic member and external communications programs that support the Academy’s governmental relations activities
  • Provide day-to-day strategic counsel on communications best practices and approaches in support of the Academy’s federal and state advocacy agendas
  • Editor-in-chief for all communications originating from the Academy’s Washington office, including the weekly Washington Report Express member newsletter, maintaining advocacy pages on the website, drafting and editing a variety of communications to the association’s members and playing a lead/supporting role in all official communications on behalf of the governmental affairs division to a variety of external stakeholders.
  • Manage the implementation of public relations and strategic advocacy strategies and tactics for public policy campaigns, working in partnership with the Academy’s Governmental Affairs Division and Public Relations Department
  • Build and nurture strong relationships with DC-based healthcare and policy media, positioning the organization as the “go-to” source for information on health care issues related to ophthalmology
  • Engage membership and external constituents and drive support for the Academy’s priority advocacy campaign issues using traditional and social media
  • Write and lead all aspects of production of a variety of materials that include newsletters, website content, toolkits, guides, reports, and related materials
  • Determine appropriate spokespersons for government relations-oriented media inquiries, providing detailed background and coaching in the delivery of key messages.
  • Serves as an Academy spokesperson for media inquiries related to governmental affairs and public policy as appropriate
  • Explore and develop partnership opportunities for public policy campaigns with key third-party groups and opinion leaders, ensuring that such relationships advance the Academy’s legislative priorities and ensure access to the highest quality of care for ophthalmology patients

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 5-7 years of related experience in progressively responsible positions as a journalist for a daily newspaper and/or online publication, an in-house public relations/communications role or supporting clients in a similar manner as part of a public relations agency.
  • Demonstrated track record of success and leadership in managing strategic communications, including developing and managing communications, advocacy, marketing and mobilization strategies
  • Mastery of Associated Press style, including writing and editing communications vehicles such as press releases, newsletters, fact sheets, articles, pitch letters and a broad range of social media that includes expert working knowledge of utilizing Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to support business objectives that include political advocacy
  • Proficient in developing and maintaining websites, social media, mobile and other communications channels
  • Demonstrated success in working closely with internal and external partners, senior-level executives, highly engaged volunteers, stakeholders and agency/contracted resources
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans
  • Creative self-starter who is able to define projects, take necessary actions and effectively engage others who are critical to success
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal/written communication, and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and support multiple projects simultaneously, multi-task, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality work, while effectively deploying messaging and audience targeting strategies
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
  • A candidate with experience in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment will find success in this role.
  • Expertise knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Significant experience with communication tools, including HTML, desktop publishing applications, social networking tools, video, podcasts and online communications platforms required
  • Experience in advocacy fundraising
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, political science or related curriculum required
