How will you make an impact in this role?

The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations; corporate sustainability (CS) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG); communications; and colleague engagement. American Express has a formal ESG strategy with three pillars (i) Promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, (ii) Build Financial Confidence, and (iii) Advance Climate Solutions. The American Express Foundation exists as a separate legal entity to carry out community giving and colleague engagement functions as part of American Express’ corporate responsibility objectives.


The Community Impact Manager will report to the Vice President of Global Philanthropy to execute the vision for the company’s community impact program, with a specific focus on the American Express Foundation’s Backing Financial Confidence and related giving under the ‘Backing Small’ initiatives and grants and financial literacy programs.  This will primarily support global programs and partnerships, including signature programs such as the ‘Backing Small’ Business Initiative and improving financial literacy among vulnerable populations.




  • Manages the execution and implementation of Backing Small and financial literacy philanthropic strategies, partnerships and priorities globally (in consultation with key market representatives where appropriate) (40%)
  • Implements program priorities in consultation with the Vice President and other senior business leaders and in line with community needs, business strategies and the company’s overall community giving and ESG objectives (25%)
  • Helps to ensure full use of targeted programs to enhance the reputation of American Express, nurture business-building opportunities, engage colleagues, manage and enhance external relationships, support ESG objectives and showcase impact communications
  • Works with Vice President to manage grant-making and processing in Smart Simple, identify appropriate and relevant projects and opportunities, avoid unnecessarily controversial ones, track, maintain and report Backing Small and financial literacy grant portfolio and other metrics to the Financial Confidence ESG working group and ESG team, and involve senior management in critical decision-making
  • Occasionally handles requests and inquiries from senior managers and Board members
  • Manages the grants review and recommendation process in the program area of Backing Financial Confidence

Minimum Qualifications:


  • 5+ years of experience within a Marketing, Project Management, Communications, Grantmaking or Corporate Social Responsibility focused role.
  • Bachelors’ degree (required) in relevant field with a preference for business or finance or corporate grantmaking background, or relevant work experience.
  • Strategic mindset with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong marketing and communications mindset to translate social impact to stories for key external audiences.
  • Ability to navigate a complex and matrixed organization
  • Strong project management and organizational skills to operate in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and effectively set and meet deadlines
  • Outstanding interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong partnership-building, stakeholder management and program execution skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with grantmaking systems and corporate philanthropy regulations in the USA or globally.
  • Proactive approach and ability to work autonomously and take initiative.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.





Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
