SUMMARY:

The National Association of Manufacturers is seeking a speechwriter/strategic messaging manager to join our communications team. As an integral member of the team, the speechwriter clearly expresses the NAM’s goals and messaging, in writing, for NAM members, policymakers, media and the public. The manager drafts impactful copy for our diverse audiences in a variety of styles and tones without sacrificing the NAM’s brand or its cohesive voice in print and digital communications. The manager has the flexibility to improve the NAM’s written products by helping evaluate and implement processes, research and coordination.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING (OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED):

  • Serve as a deputy to the Director of Executive Communications.
  • Write and edit copy for articles, op-eds, blogs, testimonies, reports, newsletters and other printed and electronic communications. Draft or assist in drafting remarks and presentations for NAM leadership.
  • Work with colleagues to keep projects moving on schedule, including planning/initial scheduling; coordinating all phases with key providers and project managers; and following through to meet production deadlines and provide high-quality, creative products.
  • Serve as the messaging point person for specific policy issues and portfolios.
  • Display agility in balancing short-notice requests with longer-term projects while meeting stringent deadlines.
  • Understand nuance of tone and objectives for all written communications.
  • Thrive in a high-energy, fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • Synthesize information quickly to write compelling, persuasive copy.
  • As needed, assist editor in providing prompt and accurate proofreading for time-sensitive NAM letters, statements and testimony.

 

EXAMPLES OF DECISION-MAKING

On your own authority: Ensure consistent editorial style and appropriate editorial/rewrite approaches; meet deadlines.

Support of your associates: Manage expectations of non-communications staff.

Approval required by a supervisor: Sign-off on expenditures, approved absences and changes to NAM editorial style standards.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field.
  • Two or more years of work experience in speechwriting or related communications field.
  • Significant experience preparing a variety of written materials of varying topics and styles for diverse audiences.
  • Experience that demonstrates excellent writing, proofing, editing, research and project-management skills.
  • Basic knowledge of business, American government and public policy.
  • Ability to work with a broad cross-section of the organization.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Digital publishing experience a plus.

 

LOCATION:

Washington, D.C., with occasional telework opportunities.
