Job Summary
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) seeks an experienced Manager of External and Internal Affairs to provide management and direction for all activities, staff, and budgets involved with public programming and internal communications.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Dissemination and External Affairs, this senior manager oversees a team of 5 staff in two units: Programming and Communications, plus additional project-based contractors, as needed.
The ideal candidate will have skills and knowledge in all aspects of academic and public programming, institutional writing, and internal communications.
The Getty Research Institute is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing awareness of the visual arts and their various histories through its expertise, ongoing collecting program, public programs, institutional partnerships, exhibitions, publications, digital services, and residential scholars programs. Among the world’s premier art libraries, the Getty Library and its Special Collections include over 1.5 million volumes, rare materials, and digital resources, which serve a vast international community of scholars and the interested public. The Institute’s activities and scholarly resources guide and sustain each other and collectively provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and scholarly exchange.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Provides management, coordinated strategic vision, and direction for the department, working closely with the Associate Director, Dissemination and External Affairs, GRI senior management, staff and colleagues, both internal and external, and others across the Getty.
- Plans short-term and long-term goals for GRI programming and communication
- Reviews, maintains, improves, and/or initiates workflows for optimal outcomes.
- Oversees projects, programs, and staff
- Applies advanced knowledge of area of expertise, including institutional writing for variety of audiences, and developing public programs
- Advances GRI’s mission and dissemination of research by initiating and executing public programs
- Manages subordinate employees including mentoring, coaching, counseling, training, evaluating and coordinating the employee’s work and typically delegates assignments to subordinates
- Develops, establishes, modifies, and executes operating policies and procedures affecting assigned areas and may have organization-wide effect
- Acts as an advisor to staff members to meet schedules or resolve technical or operational problems
- Works directly with internal and external clients on a variety of issues and projects
- Manages joint projects/programs and negotiations with organizational partners.
- Participates, advises, and represents the Department and the Getty on internal and external teams and projects.
- Ensures budget, schedules and performance requirements are met for department
- Monitors and shares knowledge of trends and best practices
- May contribute to the development of expected outcomes and long-range goals for the organization
- May provide recommendations that advance programmatic or organization-wide policy agenda
- Communicates with staff and key stakeholders with openness and transparency, ensuring that the team is aware of the overall department, GRI, and Getty priorities
- Provides opportunities for professional growth focusing on retention to increase capacity and stability of the team
- Inspires and motivates staff by fostering a work environment that encourages new ideas, risk-taking, team-based efforts, celebrating current achievements, and setting/meeting goals
- Manages communication strategy including proposal development
- Manages subordinate employees to achieve goals and vision for the organization, including mentoring, coaching, counseling, training, evaluating and coordinating employees’ work
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- 3 to 6 years of supervisory and/or project/process management experience and in programming public events

- Exceptional communication skills
- Demonstrated programming experience, diplomacy, and ability to work in partnership with others
- Excellent judgment, communication skills and ability to work with a wide variety of audiences. Ability to manage and motivate others and earn the respect of staff at all levels
- Effective management experience and exceptional ability to communicate professionally and collegially; demonstrated experience recruiting, evaluating, mentoring, and training staff
- Ability to manage a large number of programs and activities simultaneously
