Position Description

Manager, Grassroots Advocacy and Leadership Development

 

Summary

The NCGA Grassroots Advocacy and Leadership Development Manager is responsible for serving the national association, state affiliates and general membership. Duties primarily focus on grassroots activism and leadership programs with ancillary support to public policy, policy communications, and CornPAC.

 

Reports to:  NCGA Director, PAC and Political Strategy

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Grassroots Activation
    • Foster grower activism and ensure close working relationships with state offices on grassroots advocacy.
    • Successfully execute grassroots advocacy campaigns in online advocacy platform.
    • Work closely with public policy staff and subject matter experts to craft grassroots calls-to-actions.
    • Assist states in making grassroots activism central to membership, communications and training efforts nationally and within member states.
    • Generate regular opportunities to raise profile of grassroots activism through regular communications.
    • Lead grassroots training for association members and directors as necessary.
    • Maintain grassroots database and share campaign benchmarking results with state and national staff.
    • Conduct other duties as assigned by the public policy team.
  • Leadership Development
    • Develop and manage leadership development efforts in support of NCGA and states, including overseeing program curriculum, solicitation of candidates, and production of leadership publications, articles, and updates.
    • Serve as lead staff for Leadership Academy and other leadership programs and serve as point of contact with sponsors.
    • Raise the profile of NCGA’s leadership opportunities within membership and with state affiliates.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in leading and facilitating meetings and/or training programs.
  • Experience in political advocacy, political campaigns or the legislative process. Capitol Hill or state capitol experience preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality for all projects and data is an integral part of the position.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments, meet deadlines, remain flexible under deadlines, and provide feedback on priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions within approved scope.
  • Self-starter with excellent communication skills, customer-service orientation, and personal diplomacy.
  • Ability to follow instructions, including high attention to detail.
  • Experience with online advocacy platform highly desired.
  • Experience with MS Office—Word, Excel, PowerPoint—required.
  • Project a positive image of the organization and demonstrated ability to maintain high level of professionalism in all areas of appearance, behavior and work habits.
  • Ability to work with all levels of staff and external stakeholders.

 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, or related field
  • Two to five years professional experience

 

Travel

Requires up to travel 10-15%.
