Manager, Legislative Affairs
This position is located in Washington, DC
TRAVEL: Possible 10 days per year
The Manager, Legislative Affairs develops advocacy strategy and works to advance the
priorities of the organization before the United States Congress and external stakeholders. This consists of identifying priority issues in conjunction with internal stakeholders, providing counsel to the executive leadership team, and aiding in the development of a strategic political giving plan to advance advocacy portfolio. This position reports to the Senior Manager of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs. Duties include:
- Advocating before the U.S. Congress on AAFP strategic priorities including health IT, public health infrastructure, price transparency, competition and consolidation in health care, and administrative burden reduction
- Developing policy analyses, talking points, testimony and other background materials on legislative issues
- Proactively engaging with multi-stakeholder coalitions and partner organizations
- Facilitating and supporting events to educate AAFP member physicians, policymakers and other external audiences on issues of importance to family medicine
- Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree or through equivalent work experience, plus a minimum of six years work experience. Must have knowledge of health policy and federal legislative and regulatory processes, including understanding of Medicare and Medicaid payment and coverage, health information technology, and public health regulations. In addition, excellent communication skills; the ability to manage multiple projects on short timelines; and the ability to present to a variety of audiences at national, state and regional meetings and to Congressional staffs and legislators required.
