ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION FMI represents food retailers and wholesalers and develops and promotes policies, programs and forums supporting its members, their customers and supplier partners, and other industry stakeholders in the areas of:

• government relations;

• food and product safety and defense;

• education;

• industry collaboration and networking;

• research;

• health and wellness;

• social, environmental and sustainability programs; and

• communications.

Primary Purpose:

The Manager, Political Affairs will develop and implement a program of political activism for FMI members by managing successful programs for both the FoodPAC (Political Action Committee) and FMI LEAD (Leadership, Education, Advocacy, & Development) funds, including fundraising, compliance and events that result in increased political involvement of FMI and our members in the food industry. This position also manages the day-to-day operations and activities of the FMI townhouse located on Capitol Hill.

Essential Job Functions:

Develop and execute a successful fundraising strategy for FoodPAC and LEAD
Work with lobbyists to identify Members of Congress and elections that are critical to FMI and create plans for industry involvement
Work with lobbyists and FMI members to host and plan fundraising events for Members of Congress extensively utilizing the FMI townhouse
Responsible for all administration and compliance for FoodPAC and LEAD
Manage the collection and accounting process to ensure appropriate procedures and guidelines are in place and followed
Maintain working knowledge of Federal Election Commission campaign law and Internal Revenue Service regulations to ensure FMI compliance
Work with the Chief Public Policy Officer to engage the FoodPAC Advisory Committee
Organize FoodPAC and LEAD fundraising and development events to include the golf tournament at FMI’s Midwinter conference
Manage FoodPAC and LEAD budgets
Foster and maintain relationships with party organizations and other industry political action committees (PACs). Conduct regular meetings with industry PACs, particularly those of FMI member companies to maximize outreach and effectiveness
Manage the FMI townhouse, its schedule and use while coordinating maintenance, supplies and upkeep. This may involve working one day per week out of the Capital Hill townhouse office location

Other Job Functions:

Other duties and projects as assigned or directed.

Physical Requirements:

Normal office environment requiring use of typical business equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, fax, copier, etc.). Ability to travel to meetings and conferences. Ability to regularly attend local meetings off-site, and generally spend at least one day a week at the FMI townhouse located on Capitol Hill.

Education, Skills and Experience:

College degree and/or relevant work experience in government affairs
A minimum of three to five years of prior professional work experience with at least one year of experience with fundraising and filing necessary compliance reports
Extensive knowledge of the political process including the dynamics of politics at the federal level
Computer literacy with an understanding of and ability to use Microsoft Office 365 software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including presentation and public speaking skills
Strong customer service and team orientation
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong time management and project planning skills
Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
Ability to organize, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks with attention to detail
Ability to work well with internal and external colleagues
