CIPL’s leadership and staff are globally recognized data privacy thought leaders. They include former senior public and private sector professionals with extensive global and national experience in developing, interpreting, implementing, and enforcing laws, policies, and corporate privacy programs relevant to the data economy.

CIPL is looking for a Manager of Privacy and Data Policy to join our team. This position ideally will be located in our Washington, DC or New York office, however other Hunton offices (e.g. Atlanta, Houston and San Francisco) may be an option.

About the Role:

The primary purpose of the Manager of Privacy and Data Policy is to help support CIPL’s policy priorities and initiatives in the US in relation to a wide range of privacy and data related topics, including the US privacy law and policy development process. In addition, the Manager of Public Policy will also work on international privacy and data protection issues with CIPL’s global team of privacy experts based in Washington DC, London, New York and Brussels.

Day-to-day Responsibilities and Accountabilities Include:                            

  • Working closely with CIPL team members to develop strategies and implement project plans to advance CIPL’s US and global policy agenda on a wide range of privacy and data protection issues. (This includes the following topics: proposed legislation; cross border data flows; data localization; accountability-based information management and privacy governance; regional developments (e.g., US (state and federal), Canada, Latin America and Asia-Pacific); the role of the corporate data protection or privacy officer; privacy risk management; transparency and user control; privacy enhancing technologies (PETs); accountable AI; data driven innovation; data ethics; data analytics; IoT; cloud computing; cognitive cities; and data sharing between and among private sector organizations and public sector organizations; children’s data, and regulatory strategy and oversight)
  • Supporting CIPL’s work on the US privacy law and policy development process at the federal and state levels and engaging with relevant lawmakers, staff and legislative committees to educate them on CIPL’s policy recommendations based on CIPL’s expertise and experience in global privacy and data protection issues..
  • Helping to develop specific policy positions by working with CIPL leadership and CIPL member companies.
  • Working with CIPL’s Director of Public Policy and Vice President & Senior Policy Counselor to monitor policy trends relevant to CIPL’s mission and summarizing and communicating findings to CIPL staff and CIPL members.
  • Helping to maintain CIPL’s reputation as recognized experts and policy thought leaders by staying abreast of US and global public policy developments in data protection and related areas and by anticipating relevant emerging issues.
  • Seeking opportunities for and helping to manage collaboration with CIPL member companies, think tanks, academics, industry groups and policy influencers to advance CIPL’s policy agenda.
  • Helping expand relationships with current CIPL members and recruiting new CIPL members.
  • Drafting regulatory comments, white papers, issue briefs and articles.
  • Developing agendas and content for CIPL and non-CIPL events and speaking/representing CIPL at these events.
  • Assisting with special projects relevant to CIPL’s mission and CIPL members.

About You – you will have:

  • Superb writing, analytical, and public speaking skills and the ability to distill and present complex information and concepts in a clear and persuasive way.
  • Excellent knowledge of the US legislative, regulatory and policy environments in relation to privacy and broader data and digital issues, with an existing track record of contacts/collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to conduct and lead research on emerging data privacy laws, policy and organizational best practices and related legal and factual developments.
  • Strong understanding of data driven innovation and technology trends and/or computer science.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial spirit and proactive attitude and eagerness to learn and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent business acumen, understanding of the global corporate environment and practical knowledge/experience in data protection compliance and implementing a privacy management program.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: JD degree or Master of Public Policy degree required
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience (e.g., in-house, professional services firm, law firm, think tank, trade association, government, regulatory agency or legislative staff).
  • Excellent knowledge of global privacy, data protection laws and policy, and regulation of emerging technologies.
  • Strong understanding of the US federal and state legislative/regulatory process.
  • Experience writing public consultation responses, white papers or articles on issues related to privacy and data protection.
  • Business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.

Additional Interests, Experience or Qualifications:

  • Technology trends, computer science and/or data analytics.
  • Competition law, intellectual property law, and/or regulatory compliance.

Visual acuity needed to process and read extensive written communications. Ability to receive and convey detailed information through oral communication. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications. Essential competency processes include language ability, reasoning and memory. The expected salary range for New York City based employees is $133,100.00 to $212,100.00, though salaries for employees based outside of New York City may differ. Beyond an employment candidate’s physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including but not limited to, education, training, and/or experience.
