The NAM is seeking an emerging leader to join its Advocacy Department as the Manager of Public Affairs, helping to capture the impact of the NAM’s advocacy work and facilitate deeper relationships with member companies and association partners. This role serves as a connective tissue across the department as well as the broader NAM, helping to develop and deploy tools and resources to drive successful advocacy campaigns and initiatives. The right candidate for this role will help to power the growth of the NAM’s coalitions and association partnerships, and someone who embraces a growth mindset and is eager to expand their expertise as part of a best-in-class advocacy team in Washington, DC. This candidate will have the unique opportunity to engage NAM members in the association’s advocacy initiatives, and work collaboratively across the Public Affairs and Mobilization division to support engagement with the NAM’s Board and its network of association partners.


The ideal candidate for this role has:


  • Demonstrated an ability to contribute meaningfully to issue advocacy campaigns and initiatives in the political or business advocacy environment
  • Shown they are deadline and detail-oriented, able to quickly produce documents, resources or other deliverables to support NAM members and issue advocacy campaigns
  • Exceptional writing skills, being able to write quickly and succinctly for multiple internal and externally-facing audiences
  • A growth mindset — someone who is eager to meet expectations, but also demonstrate their understanding that this role is not confined to a job description either
  • Situational awareness and savvy to provide exemplary customer service to NAM members including board leaders

Day-to-day responsibilities:


  • Supporting the development and deployment of grassroots resources and messages consistent with broader NAM advocacy objectives and campaigns
  • Demonstrating the impact of NAM advocacy work through the creation of campaign reports and other dashboards to help demonstrate the impact of the NAM’s work
  • Support for the NAM’s Board Initiatives most especially during meetings of the NAM’s volunteer leadership and the NAM’s executive leadership programming
  • Supporting the organization and mobilization of the NAM’s network of grassroots advocates and key relationships in priority states and congressional districts
  • Curating tools and resources to empower member companies to take action themselves and engage their employees on priority issues
  • Supporting team efforts to build coalitions among the NAM’s network of association partners, drawing together tools and resources to support issue advocacy campaigns
  • Working in concert with the Membership Team to distribute effective and relevant tools, ranging from sign-on letters to other mobilization efforts on key issues
  • Supporting the execution of member programs for public affairs professionals, such as the Manufacturing Advocacy Council to promote member involvement in advocacy campaigns and grassroots employee engagement
  • Administrative support as needed to support team reporting efforts, curation of key contact lists, meeting coordination and additional development and deployment of resources to support advocacy campaigns




  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university is preferred;
  • Over 5 years of work experience, ideally with a background in advocacy working in a trade association, public affairs, political campaigns or Capitol Hill setting.
  • Outstanding writing abilities, including the ability to quickly and clearly distill complex information about the NAM’s advocacy activities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work as a team, build relations and collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • Event planning/management experience, including strategic planning, content development and logistics;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast paced, quality and goal driven work environment.
  • Willingness to travel on occasion as required for work functions
