Manager, State Advocacy

The State Advocacy Manager will support Share Our Strength and its mission to end childhood hunger and poverty in America by assisting with state advocacy and government relations efforts. The State Advocacy Manager will work with the Advocacy Team to build out state and local relationships, develop strategies for engaging key stakeholder groups, manage advocacy efforts in priority states, and identify and work with the team to create action plans around new policy opportunities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Track and help to progress state advocacy goals, including collaborating across internal teams to identify and monitor campaign progress throughout the year.
Assist in the development of the advocacy capacity of state and local partners and No Kid Hungry state campaigns through relationship building and trainings including webinars, conferences, and other presentations.
Provide project management of individual state legislative campaigns, such as overseeing contracting lobbyists, developing legislative goals and strategies, and coordinating internal legislative campaign support, including communications and research deliverables.
Identify and create opportunities to engage mayors, school board leaders, and other local elected officials in efforts to expand access and knowledge of nutrition programs for children and food insecurity more broadly.
Provide leadership among the anti-hunger community through demonstration of policy knowledge in coalition meetings and by presenting at peer conferences and events.
Collaborate with Share Our Strength’s Center for Best Practices to develop model legislation and policy papers to be used by those working to ensure access to nutrition for kids and families facing food insecurity.
Facilitate coordination between No Kid Hungry state campaigns or state and local partners and state leaders at the executive, cabinet, agency, legislative, and staff levels.
Represent the organization in state legislative and administration hearings and meetings to secure support and advancement of priority policies.
Draft testimony, letters of support, meeting requests, and other documents relevant to state legislative campaigns.
Develop and distribute periodic newsletters for local and state elected leaders to include policy recommendations, No Kid Hungry campaign updates, and other relevant information.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
3-5 years of experience in local and/or state government relations and advocacy or a local and/or state government entity.
Excellent and proven research and persuasive writing skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain focus and detail orientation in a fluid environment.
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills, including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
Adept at coordinating and prioritizing individual workload and maintaining focus and communication with colleagues in a remote environment.
Proven ability to excel working independently and as part of a (part virtual and in-person) team environment.
Credible skill in clear, persuasive, and dynamic communication with various stakeholders.
Strong computer skills in MS Office suite.
Demonstrated interest in anti-hunger and anti-poverty issues.
