Manager, State Policy
Supervisor: Senior Director, State Policy & Grassroots Advocacy
Position Summary: Manage AFSP’s state and local policy work; enhance AFSP’s state advocacy presence online and in states and localities throughout the United States and Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
- Tracks state legislation and prepares related action alerts, letters, testimonies, reports, and fact sheets
- Compiles research on state policy issues to support the development of new issue briefs and to maintain existing issue briefs
- Serves as subject matter expert on key state policy priorities
- Manages state policy sections of AFSP website and internal ChapterLand state policy pages
- Leads development of social content and blogs on state policy priority issues, in collaboration with AFSP communications staff
- Represents organization at relevant coalitions, conferences, and public events on state policy issues
- Builds and maintains relationships with state and local public officials and government agencies
- Manages and tracks AFSP communications with state public officials; tracks and responds to social media posts made by key state public officials
- Works collaboratively with chapters to support state policy activities
- Supports state policy activities of the internship program
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, social work, law, or related field
- 2-4 years organizing experience in grassroots campaigns and/or public policy, preferably with a nonprofit organization
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive required; experience with grassroots engagement and legislative tracking software (Soft Edge, CQ Roll Call, FiscalNote, Quorum, etc.) preferred
- Ability to effectively communicate complex policy issues to diverse audiences via printed materials, social media, and other online content writing
- Comfortable giving formal presentations to large and small audiences, in-person and virtually
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
Salary and Benefits:
Annual salary range: 55,000-65,000K
22 PTO (vacation, sick, wellness and personal days) your first year of employment (5 additional days 2nd year)
