The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is seeking a dynamic and creative Marketing & Communications Manager to serve as key member of the Communications and Marketing team supporting NHPCO and its affiliate organizations. Reporting to the Vice President, Marketing, Communications, and Membership, the Manager will function as a marketing and communications expert, bridging multiple content forms and channels while acting as a liaison to NHPCO’s Advocacy, Policy, Regulatory, and Quality teams, as well as overseeing media engagement for the organization.  The Marketing & Communications Manager will supervise and support the professional growth of the Communications Specialist and will work as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment that fosters creativity.

The Marketing & Communications Manager is based in the Washington, DC area and is eligible to work a hybrid telework arrangement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • As a leading position on the Marketing and Communications Team, serves in a leadership role to develop and implement marketing and communications strategies; supports the VP of Marketing, Communications, and Membership in ensuring resources are optimally applied toward achieving organizational goals.
  • Supervises and supports the professional growth of the Communications Specialist.
  • Acts as marketing and communications lead supporting internal clients who manage key organizational functions: Advocacy, Policy, Regulatory, and Quality.
  • Conducts media outreach and serves as media contact for NHPCO and its affiliate organizations.
  • Analyzes media performance over time, and adjusts approach to drive greater success.
  • Oversees and supports the development of organizational key messages, talking points, communications and marketing plans, editorial calendars, and communications guidance.
  • Writes and edits content for a wide variety of formats, including blogs, websites, social media, newsletters, promotional emails, press releases, magazines and journals, speeches, conference and event scripts and presentations, podcasts, and more.
  • Oversees complete editorial and production process for NHPCO’s quarterly digital publication, NewsLine, to include editorial planning, drafting/editing content, and working with design.
  • Writes and/or edits, formats, and distributes member emails.
  • Plays a key role in the creation of NHPCO conference and events content, to include developing messaging, drafting scripts and talking points, creating PowerPoint slides, and providing editorial advice and support for colleagues who develop related content, including signage, programs, materials for exhibitors/supporters, etc.
  • Writes, edits, and supports the production of NHPCO’s annual report.
  • Provides input for the development of Marketing and Communications budgets.
  • Provides support to NHPCO and its affiliate events, as needed.
  • Serves as NHPCO liaison for special projects as assigned by the VP of Marketing, Communications, and Membership.


  • Bachelor’s degree along with four to five years of progressive experience in communications, public relations, or media relations required.
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in government, politics, or advocacy communications.
  • Candidates with experience in the hospice/palliative care field, non-profits, or member associations will receive higher ranking.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; proficiency with social media practices and platforms, and the ability to learn other programs as needed; video editing experience a plus.


  • Communications/Writing Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Track record of successful media engagement, preferably in a context related to shaping federal policy. Knowledge of communications principles for print, broadcast, and social media, and the ability to strategically carrying key messages over different formats.
  • Teamwork/Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively with individuals and teams and enhance professionalism within the organization.
  • Management/Organizational Capabilities: Ability to supervise at least one person and help them thrive within the organization and grow as a professional. Ability to plan and manage projects independently, work in a fast-paced environment, navigate multiple priorities with superior attention to detail, and meet deadlines. Passion for high-quality outputs.
  • Customer Orientation: High level of customer service skills and ability to work with various constituencies. Ability to engage effectively with a multitude of stakeholders, including colleagues, internal clients, members, potential donors, board members, the media, and the public.

This position is classified as a full-time, exempt salaried position with a starting base salary at $76,800 – $115,200 annually (commensurate with related experience) plus an opportunity to earn annual merit increases and potential, but not guaranteed, performance bonuses.   NHPCO offers an excellent total compensation package, which includes medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, short- and long-term disability plans, retirement, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation/sick leave, twelve paid holidays, twelve weeks paid parental leave, wellness programs, and more!
