The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has an exciting opportunity for a Media & Public Affairs Manager to join our Office of Communications! Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Media & Public Affairs Manager will cultivate relationships between AAAS and the media and promote AAAS and its positions at the nexus between science and society. Working with internal and external partners, this position will develop and maintain AAAS’ position as a thought leader on science.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage media strategy and drive media relations around Office of Communications initiatives and select AAAS programs and meetings; supervise external PR agency’s media projects
  • Provide public affairs support to select AAAS initiatives, as well as partner with the Office of Government Relations to promote the organization’s policy and leadership positions
  • Drive enterprise communications and public affairs initiatives for the organization
  • Build relationships with national, local, Beltway and trade reporters; draft and issue statements and press releases; and pitch storylines, thought leadership platforms, and subject matter experts
  • Handle spokesperson identification, preparation, and engagement (e.g., media training, messaging, interview preparation, staffing interviews)
  • Participate in messaging sessions and help develop messaging platforms and internal handbook
  • Partner with Director of Communications and Social Media Director on integrated strategies and execution around AAAS editorial calendar
  • Manage communications officer’s media projects (e.g., drafting statements, sending daily media reports, maintaining media lists, contacting reporters, etc.)
  • Support development of crisis communications protocol and escalation process and implement as appropriate, in collaboration with the Chief Communications Officer and Science Press Package Executive Director

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5-7 years of media relations and public affairs experience
  • Experience identifying KPIs and measuring campaign results
  • Experience in a scientific or policy setting preferred
  • Experience with issues management and crisis communications
  • Knowledge of what constitutes newsworthy angles and proven ability to secure media results across a range of outlets
  • Understanding of the evolving media landscape and effective methods to disseminate news and engage a range of reporters and editors
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities while coordinating multiple projects
  • Solutions oriented mindset to address challenges, which may require innovation and creativity and typically involves in-depth analysis and risk assessment
  • Ability to build productive business relationships with external and internal partners and work collaboratively with colleagues toward a unified vision
  • Self-starter that can work independently and entrepreneurially
