Our Corporate Marketing department is seeking a Media Relations Manager to join our Worcester, MA team.

 

Position summary:

Responsible for partnering with company and business leadership, as well as members of the company’s marketing, investor relations, community relations and other teams, to develop, implement and manage strategic PR, media relations and corporate communication programs that strengthen the company’s brand, in particular in the insurance trade, business and consumer media. Provide support for issues management and corporate initiatives as needed. Serve as company spokesperson as appropriate.
This is a Full-time/Exempt role.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Individual contributor who works with director of media relations and members of our company and business unit leadership teams to develop, manage and implement media relations and communication programs and strategies that help The Hanover and its business units strengthen and expand awareness and understanding of their respective value propositions, growth strategies, business performance and brand among target audiences
  • Create and capitalize opportunities in the media to showcase the company’s products, services, leadership, performance and capabilities
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with internal and external sources to drive and execute PR and media relations programs and strategies
  • Help manage relationships with editors and reporters at targeted media outlets, including insurance trades, business and consumer media, as well as vertical trade media
  • Research and prepare news releases and other materials to generate publicity for The Hanover
  • Manage proactive and reactive media interactions and provide PR and media relations counsel and support as needed, including assisting in responding and managing sensitive and consequential media inquiries and interactions
  • Help build and strengthen The Hanover’s news bureau, including development of press releases and other background materials used with the media
  • Develop and maintain media lists and historical records of all media placements
  • Provide miscellaneous support on internal and external communications projects as needed
  • Create and maintain company background materials, i.e. company profiles, bios, etc., use with news media
  • Manage corporate award and recognition submissions, i.e. best places to work rankings, etc., and key industry leadership awards
  • Act as a company spokesperson with print, broadcast and web-based news outlets, as appropriate
  • Manage company interactions with the news media in keeping with our corporate media policy, preparing members of our Partner Group, Senior Leadership and others for media interviews, coordinating and participating in interviews
  • Manage financial news disclosures and other corporate news announcements, including disclosures made in compliance with NYSE and SEC regulations for public companies
  • Serve as a member of Corporate Communications’ special situations team, participating in planning the company’s response for important corporate media and business issues, such as legal actions against the company, position eliminations, hurricanes and storms, helping to minimize negative publicity that could impact the business
  • Provide communications planning and execution support for M&A activities in support of corporate development, ensuring timely and consistent communications to relevant constituencies i.e. board, regulators, investors, rating agencies, media and employees
  • Plan and manage the company’s external efforts related to business continuity, pandemic and crisis planning and response
  • Support profile-raising media placement and visibility campaigns, particularly as they relate to new products and services
  • Provide PR, media relations and communications support to investor relations, legislative and government affairs leadership, as needed
  • Serve as media relations liaison for community relations, managing and advising on community relations media efforts
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on secured media coverage for the company
  • Implement and maintain communications standards for external and internal communications programs
  • Oversee maintenance of critical media and business references, including access to online newswires, clipping and research services, and trade and business publications.

  • Ability to develop, manage and implement PR, media relations and broader Corporate Communications programs and strategic plans that support key business objectives, brand-building and profile-raising efforts
  • Ability to work effectively with the company’s most senior leadership team, providing PR and media relations counsel and support as needed
  • Ability to anticipate and manage sensitive and consequential corporate and media issues
  • Ability to initiate media coverage that showcases the company’s brand, products, services, leadership, performance and capabilities
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with NYSE and SEC requirements related to public company disclosures
  • Ability to implement and maintain company news bureau in which important news and initiatives are consistently announced through news releases
  • Ability to manage and implement communications related to key financial news, such as acquisitions
  • Knowledge of social media channels, including strategic best practices, preferred vendor support, and some familiarity with social media advertising
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality for critical corporate issues and initiatives
  • Ability to develop media relations and communications materials for external use, and occasional internal use
  • Knowledge of media ad buying and planning, and media pitching
  • Ability to write and proof materials in accordance with A.P. Style
  • Knowledge of the property and casualty insurance business
  • Familiarity with Cision, ReviewTrackers, HootSuite, PRNewswire, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and Newsweaver.

Position Requirements:

  • Typically has 5-10 years of related experience, Bachelor’s degree required, higher level degree may be desired
  • PR agency or public company experience highly valued
  • Record of success in brand-building and profile-raising role
  • Possesses and applies a comprehensive knowledge of particular field of specialization to the completion of difficult assignments. May have accountability for a specific function(s) within discipline
  • Plans, conducts and supervises assignments, typically involving the larger and more important projects or more than one project. Reviews progress and evaluates results
  • Schedules and may supervise project work
  • Acts as liaison with other departments, divisions, and organizations
  • Evaluates progress and results and recommends major changes in procedures
  • Operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action or decision
  • May be designated as a lead worker
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other standard office equipment
  • Ability to travel as necessary
