Center for Popular Democracy
Brooklyn, NY

Position Title: National Organizer, Justice Transformation

Position Location: Brooklyn, NY preferred, will also consider highly qualified remote applicants.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a National Organizer to join our Justice Transformation Team.

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with nearly 50 affiliates in over 30 states and Puerto Rico to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

The National Organizer will focus on supporting a cohort of CPD/A affiliates and other movement partners to develop and win transformative campaigns that focus on the broader criminal legal system and advancing a new approach to community and public safety without the police. This role will provide a range of direct campaign support (strategic and technical) to CPD/A affiliates in collaboration with staff from CPD/A’s Education and Justice Transformation Team, the Base-building Team, and the Communications Team, among others, to help win local campaigns. As part of the Education and Justice Transformation Team, the National Organizer will also work to support affiliates in engaging federal advocacy efforts to decrease federal spending on law enforcement and other aspects of the carceral state.

The ideal candidate will have about 6 years of full-time grassroots organizing and campaign-building experience, including particular experience in campaigns aimed at defunding the police and prisons, decarceration, and transforming the criminal legal system. While we estimate about 6 years of experience in the areas listed above, our focus will be on demonstrated experience and success, not just years.

The National Organizer will eventually report to the Co-Director of the Justice Transformation team. In the immediate term they will report to the Interim Campaign Manager.

  • Support engagement in federal advocacy efforts to facilitate shared learning between affiliates;
  • Collaborate with other CPD teams, including Research, Communications, and Base-Building;
  • Produce fundamental organizing and campaign-building tools, including research and policy briefs and digital and communications toolkits, to support affiliates.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with relevant organizations and coalitions to move relevant campaigns;
  • Support program fundraising, as needed.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Demonstrated experience in organizing and local/grassroots campaign development.
  • A commitment to social and racial justice organizing, and fluency and understanding of the challenges facing Black and other communities of color, young people of color, immigrant communities, and low-and moderate income families.
  • Ability to work in coalitions and alliances.
  • Ability to build relationships of trust and mutual respect with a broad range of people.
  • Relevant understanding of the criminal legal system, policing and incarceration and their impact on Black and brown communities.
  • Campaign research or policy experience and campaign-building training.
