Position Summary:

The NRDC Action Fund Political and Advocacy Director (contract) has lead responsibility for guiding the advocacy strategies for the NRDC Action Fund’s environmental defense campaign. Working with key program, communications, and Center for Policy Advocacy staff, the Political and Advocacy Director (contract) will ensure that all activities undertaken by the Action Fund advance the strategic direction of the organization and are aligned with the work of the communications team and the issue advocacy work of the institution. The Political and Advocacy Director (contract) will also work with Action Fund staff to develop and implement a powerful electoral plan.

Responsibilities:Strategic Direction

  • Be the lead Action Fund representative in the development and implementation of the joint NRDC/NRDC Action Fund advocacy and accountability campaigns.
  • Manage the Action Fund communications and political work, i.e., manage and work with the Action Fund communications and political directors.
  • Help to ensure that all NRDC advocacy and accountability plans incorporate an Action Fund component as appropriate.
  • Lead the drafting of the programmatic components of the NRDC Action Fund’s strategic planning process.

Electoral Strategy

  • Ensure that the Action Fund’s electoral strategies are integrated and aligned with the Action Fund’s programmatic work and goals, as legally permissible.
  • Oversee the NRDC Action Fund PAC contributions to ensure they are in alignment with the Action Fund’s electoral strategy and that they are a strategic use of limited resources.
  • Lead the process for exploring opportunities to expand the Action Fund’s electoral efforts to the state level

Communications Strategy

  • Manage the integration and coordination of the communications strategy into the Action Fund’s larger campaign and electoral plans and efforts
  • Participate in the development of a communications strategy by the communication director

Other/miscellaneous

  • Assist in the development and presentation of fundraising proposals to donors
  • Provide strategic leadership in the development and management of the NRDC Action Fund’s relationships with the progressive community and other key allies and partners
  • Strong writer to write plans for our colleagues and donor

Qualifications:

  1. At least 10-15 years of relevant experience executing and managing issue and/or electoral campaigns
  2. Familiarity with a range of online and offline campaigning strategies, including direct advocacy, grasstops outreach, digital organizing, and earned and paid media outreach strategies.
  3. Strong project management skills.
  4. Ability to facilitate team discussions and build consensus.
  5. Ability to juggle multiple, complex projects simultaneously and effectively.
  6. Environmental issue knowledge preferred
  7. Results oriented
  8. Team player
  9. Good sense of humor
