SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Organizer creates, supports, and implements organizing campaigns, programs, and events to further with the NYCLU’s mission and strategic priorities and as part of the NYCLU’s interdisciplinary approach to culture change. The NYCLU seeks an experienced, innovative, and dynamic Organizer who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced organization and can skillfully design, implement and/or support the NYCLU approaches to a broad docket of civil rights and civil liberties issues.

The Organizer will have a particular focus on the Central New York Region, in addition to the NYCLU state-wide priority areas. Specifically, health equity, racial justice, Indigenous rights, criminal justice, law enforcement, privacy and technology, reproductive rights, immigration, and education.  The Organizer will work closely with leaders and staff across the NYCLU—including the Legal and Field Organizing Departments, the Education Policy Center, and our Regional Offices—to ensure that the NYCLU has an integrated, holistic approach to furthering the NYCLU mission.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plays an integral role in developing campaign plans to support strategic priorities, including coordinating and collaborating across departments and regions.
  • Organizes, strategizes, and leads public advocacy campaigns that mobilize NYCLU members and supporters to uphold and defend civil liberties and civil rights.
  • Recognizes and recommends issues for the NYCLU’s consideration
  • Organizes large-scale public education and organizing events, such as rallies, community forums, lobby visits, public hearings, news conferences, panel discussions, and trainings.
  • Conducts extensive public education, including public speaking at community events and representing the NYCLU in the media.
  • Contributes to the development of public education materials and workshops, including contributing to and/or editing blogs, public letters, reports, etc.
  • Contributes to the administrative management of the Central New York Regional office.
  • Facilitates workshops and trainings to the public, and trains others as facilitators.
  • Provides support and guidance on the volunteer engagement program,
  • Advises other staff on organizing strategies and help them to implement those strategies.
  • Builds relationships with grassroots groups, communities, advocacy organizations, and government agencies, including representing the NYCLU at community events, coalition meetings, panels, and rallies.
  • Organizes and coordinates coalition efforts.
  • Stays abreast of NYCLU’s statewide organizing portfolio, including supporting the work of organizers statewide, where requested.
  • Prepares and delivers testimony at public hearings.
  • Actively supports the NYCLU’s internal and external commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with elected officials in the State Legislature and local elected officials.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Substantial experience in lobbying, legislative or political organizing work.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and complete tasks, with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • A demonstrated ability to advocate effectively, including an ability to initiate and follow through on a legislative or campaign effort.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the goals and priorities of the NYCLU.
  • Self-motivation and an ability to work collaboratively.
  • Willingness to travel within New York State for work-related meetings and events.
  • Bachelor’s in public policy is preferred or other related area.
  • At least 5 -7 years of experience in similar or related field.
