As part of the Center for Health Equity Research and Department of Social Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine, it is the mission of the UNC Re-Envisioning Health and Justice Lab to shine a light on how mass incarceration drives inequality in the US and impacts the social determinants of health at the individual and community levels. Our work draws on the expertise of justice-involved persons, corrections staff, and community stakeholders to inform innovative research that aims to eliminate health disparities, understand and address the social determinants of health of justice-involved persons, and contribute to policy change in the areas of criminal justice reform and mass incarceration.

The United States has over 6.5 million adults involved in the criminal justice system, with significant over-representation of non-white racial and ethnic minority groups. Even brief exposure to the criminal justice system can have lasting effects on not just the individual, but families and entire communities. It can disqualify people from housing and employment opportunities, exacerbate mental and behavioral health conditions, and put people at increased risk for chronic illness. To effect meaningful change, it is essential that stakeholders and policy makers are equipped with evidence-based research in order to make the informed policy changes.
The Policy Analyst will serve as a conduit between the lab and invested parties looking to positive impact the justice system. The hired candidate will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data on federal, state, and institutional policies that may impact health outcomes among incarcerated populations. They will be responsible for developing content for broad audiences, such as contributing to the COVID Prison Project website, giving presentations and trainings to research staff and stakeholders, and assisting with the development of whitepapers and manuscripts.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to manage multiple and changing priorities is essential. The hired candidate should possess a knowledge of the criminal justice system and strong ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including policy makers, stakeholders, academics, and community members.
The ideal candidate will have personal experience with incarceration or involvement in the justice system.
