Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association is a bipartisan organization of Governors from the 55 states, territories, and commonwealths whose mission is to share best practices, speak with an informed voice on national policy and develop innovative solutions to improve citizens’ lives through state government and support the principles of federalism.

Through NGA, Governors identify priority issues and deal with matters of public policy and governance at the state and national levels. Our policy and research arm, the NGA Center for Best Practices, helps Governors find collective answers to common issues and assists in developing and implementing innovative solutions to public policy challenges. Our Government Relations team ensures that Governors are a strong voice in Washington, DC. NGA also provides total consultative services, including management and technical assistance to both new and incumbent Governors, their senior executive staff, and their trusted advisors.

We’re looking to add a bright, resourceful and organized Policy Coordinator to our NGA Center for Best Practices team supporting multiple policy teams. In this role, you will provide administrative, organizational, and basic research assistance to one or more programs and policy issue teams within the NGA Center for Best Practices.

Other important responsibilities of the Policy Coordinator include:

  • Support Center leadership, programs and policy issue teams with event prep, printing, scheduling events and phone calls, corresponding with partner organizations, and managing other correspondence at the request of the Center director, Center deputy director and program directors;
  • Manage calendar appointments/prepares agendas and other relevant materials for programs, policy issues, events, and project activities including strategic planning meetings, internal Center meetings, staff retreats, weekly team meetings, and weekly Office of Executive Director reports;
  • Coordinate administrative logistics for events (onsite and virtual), in collaboration with the events team. This includes registration, meeting specifications, travel logistics, participant expense reimbursement, speaker management, badge production, data collection and reporting, virtual meeting set-up and support and other event related tasks;
  • Coordinate projects, distribute information, maintain an organizational system of tracking, monitoring and prioritizing tasks and projects; follows up on details, in writing, on the telephone, virtually using a variety of web tools, or in-person; and communicates project status to program management;
  • Manage database contacts, groups to ensure data integrity;
  • Support all phases of document preparation including proofreading;
  • Update Center policy trackers by collecting information and compiling monthly newsletter content with input from policy analysis;
  • Work with senior/policy analysts to develop reports, materials for site visits, and provide other research assistance support as needed;
  • Manage expense reimbursement process;
  • Develop and update administrative systems to make them more efficient;
  • Assist with grant reporting requirements, working with the Finance Office to obtain pertinent budget materials;
  • Maintain SharePoint file share system, organizational databases, spreadsheets, and other collaboration tools;
  • Monitor program(s) mail and email requests, answers questions and inquiries from policy advisors, routes questions to program team members(s) when appropriate;
  • Demonstrating a commitment to NGA’s mission and goals to constructively serve the needs of all Governors; and
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor, Deputy Director or Director, Center for Best Practices.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, bachelor’s degree preferred. Two plus years working in a related field, preferrable in an area(s) of program and policy issues that are within the portfolio of the NGA Center for Best Practices. Experience working with Governors, working in federal or state agencies or non-profit organizations is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate must have demonstrated ability to:

  • Communicate effectively through oral and written communication;
  • Have attention to detail, deadlines, and organizational and time management skills;
  • Work independently, set priorities and handle multiple issues at the same time;
  • Use diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate internal/external customers;
  • Strong knowledge in operating MS Office suite applications and web tools;
  • Collaborate and work in a team environment; and
  • Travel, as necessary.
