Policy Development and Regulatory Affairs Manager

Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world’s access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.
The Waymo Policy and Government Affairs team has a front seat in this exciting moment in the evolution of autonomous driving technology, transportation and tech policy. Successful navigation of the policy landscape is critically important to deploying and scaling our business. Our team works directly with policymakers and third party groups at the national, state and local levels to help advance transportation policy, educate on the safety benefits of the technology, and advance consumer awareness and acceptance. Internally, our efforts support the innovative work of engineering, product, strategy, and partnerships teams, and we work closely with highly-skilled legal and safety experts.
In this role, you’ll:
- Develop Waymo’s policy positions on matters relevant to launching our business in dense, urban areas, particularly in California
- Work in lockstep with the Government and Community Relations Manager to co-create and manage the campaigns needed to ultimately ensure Waymo is successful in meeting our business objectives in California
- Lead cross functional working groups and collaborate internally to with the goal of ensuring our product and impacts are aligned with public sector priorities
- Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and represent the company at external events where deep policy expertise is needed. Public speaking and some travel may be required
- Work closely with the State Policy Team and Legal Team on regulatory and legislative matters that involve local and state levels of government
At a minimum we’d like you to have:
- Optimism, confidence, humility and an appetite to learn a lot and work very hard
- A background in policy development in the area of urban planning, ideally transportation specifically
- An understanding of how decision making happens across all levels of government in California
- Excellent project management skills, even when you’re responsible for project managing content outside of your area of expertise
- A track record of being able to work cross functionally, and to translate information gathered externally into information that can be applied to internal decision making
- A minimum of five years working in policy development, ideally in the areas of transportation, urban planning, or technology/innovation
It’s preferred if you have:
- Experience applying your policy expertise to issues in the Bay Area
- Experience working in both the public sector and private sector
- An understanding of how the regulatory and legislative processes work in CA
