About This Role
Rewiring America’s mission is two-fold: 1) demonstrating that rapid electrification of all aspects of the American economy is the key to combating climate change; and 2) designing and promoting practical policies to accomplish it. While most approaches to climate policy begin with the question of, “What is politically feasible?”, we began our analysis by asking “what is technologically necessary?” And the results are compelling: decarbonization through the rapid electrification of the US economy is not only possible, but economically advantageous as well, both in terms of household savings and millions of jobs created.
Using today’s technologies, we demonstrate that we can deliver $1,000 – $2,000 per year in savings to the average American household while reducing our nation’s GHG emissions by 85% in 15 years. In the process, we’ll create 25 million net new jobs in the near term and 5 million net new jobs over the long term. Given the savings on fuel costs (the wind blows and the sun shines without our paying them to), we can afford to make sure these new jobs are good-paying, life-enriching jobs. What’s more, these jobs are necessarily local, as much of the work to be done is at the household level as we upgrade and replace in the infrastructure of our homes and buildings.
Rewiring America seeks a full time policy fellow to support policy development to build bold, detailed policies to electrify our economy. The primary responsibilities of the fellow will include conducting policy analysis on existing legislation and executive branch action, assisting in stakeholder outreach, and preparing policy recommendations in conjunction with our advisory committees. The ideal candidate will have strong policy research and analysis skills and familiarity with federal climate policy.
Rewiring America is a new coalition of engineers, entrepreneurs, and volunteers focused on addressing climate change and boosting the economy by electrifying everything, and is founded by Alex Laskey (formerly co-founder and President of Opower) and Saul Griffith (founder of Otherlab and recipient of MacArthur Grant).
