The Political Advocacy Specialist supports Government Affairs and Political Advocacy programs including the FamMedPAC (AAFP Political Action Committee, the key contact program, state, federal, and chapter advocacy efforts, and programs like the annual Family Medicine Advocacy Summit).  This position will report to the Director of Political Affairs and Member Engagement.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Support daily operations of FamMedPAC, including developing fundraising campaigns and solicitation content, development of general PAC communications, administration of annual PAC budget, political events calendar, disbursement ratios by party, and website content.
  • Support activities related to the Key Contact membership advocacy programs.  Maintain and update Key Contact program pieces, program landing page, draft new program content when needed.  Answer member questions about Key Contact program, identify and recruit advocates, maintain Key Contact database.
  • Manage the AAFP “Fighting for Family Medicine” landing page.  Create and disseminate grassroots alerts on federal and state legislative, regulatory, priorities as necessary using advocacy software.  Ability to succinctly capture and describe complex healthcare issues and motivate members to act.  Determine best call to action strategy: e.g., locked messages versus testimonials from AAFP membership.  Track participation rates and share success metrics in advocacy publications like Advocacy Insider. Make tactical recommendations to Government Affairs team on leveraging grassroots activity in lobbying outreach.
  • Support with planning and management of annual Family Medicine Advocacy Summit (FMAS) event, as well as Board and senior leadership advocacy engagement.  Supporting activities include coordinating and collaborating with AAFP partners in Member Relations, Registration, Marketing, Communications, Board Liasion and Meetings to identify attendees, create agendas, advocate training, advocacy deliverables, and secure speakers.

Essential Experience and Responsibilities:

  • Experience in grassroots/tops advocacy-including crafting and implementing alerts for member activation.
  • Congressional, political or campaign experience at the state and federal level, political fundraising experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong presentation, organizational, project management, and event planning skills are required.  The ability to plan, organize, manage details, and monitor own work necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues from other departments, advocates, and members of the political and advocacy community.  Ability to multitask and juggle multiple responsibilities and requests daily.
  • Problem solving ability is vital. Choosing the correct course of action based on operating procedures is important.
  • Ability to foster involvement and enthusiasm from PAC and grassroots advocates to participate in advocacy programs.
  • This position requires creativity, energy, and resourcefulness. Some travel and work outside normal business hours required.
  • Other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will have:        

  • Education beyond a Bachelor’s degree in an academic field directly related and essential to the position or through equivalent work experience plus at least two years related work experience
  • Ability to articulate the mission and vision of the AAFP. Comfortable interacting with AAFP membership, departmental colleagues, and other internal partners.
  • Energetic and innovative approach to the role with a proven ability to execute a strategy in a collaborative manner
  • Knowledge of federal election cycles in House and Senate
  • Familiarity with grassroots platforms
  • Financial literacy, knowledge of political accounting specific to campaign finance and lobbying reports helpful
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Public Affairs Council PAC, Grassroots or Public Affairs Certificate is desirable
