BETAH Associates is a professional services firm with an immediate opening for a Public Affairs Specialist. The Public Affairs Specialist is responsible for the coordination of media relations and preparing of external communications. Plans, prepares, and relays information concerning the customer to the press and the wider community to gain understanding and acceptance for the customer. Develops and maintains lines of communication with media contacts and other external audience groups. Develops and reviews material intended for public release to ensure the materials represent the best interest of the customer and are consistent with objectives, policies, and regulations. Drafts and disseminates press releases and press kits. Monitors media and news coverage daily. Develops media pitches and conducts media outreach and follow up. Initiates, plans, and oversees media events hosted by the customer. Expands customer’s relationships with third-party publications, including trade magazines and professional journals. Works closely with customer leadership to understand customer mission and priorities.
Essential, Knowledge, Duties & Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Content Developer as appropriate to repackage storytelling content into media outreach and materials.
Proactively research, pitch to the customer, draft, and disseminate press releases on customer’s newsworthy and priority programs, initiatives, and activities.
Develop and produce press kits/background materials.
FAQs, fact sheets, speaker bios, one-pagers, program overviews.
Develop and maintain relationships with key media.
Proactively research, pitch, draft, and submit op-eds and letters to the editor.
Perform daily media monitoring of customer news coverage and other areas of interest.
Develop media pitches and conduct media outreach and follow-up.
Proactively pitch to customer, coordinate, and staff customer-hosted media events and activities.
Develop longstanding relationships with select third-party publications to which the customer should regularly submit articles (e.g., Corrections Today, Police Chief, and Forensics).
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, or communications and
5 years of public affairs experience.
Specific experience in areas of law enforcement and the criminal justice field a plus.
