We are looking for an experienced public affairs specialist to support execution of the company’s public policy and public relations strategies, focusing on issues and engagement opportunities relevant to GM Financial at the federal and state levels. An ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who can brainstorm ideas, collaborate with others, and has public policy, government affairs and/or related communications expertise.



  • Promote engagement and education with relevant federal, state and local lawmakers, their staffs, civic organizations and other key stakeholder groups as assigned
  • Analyze federal and state public policy issues relevant to the company and auto finance industry and develop any associated messaging/briefing materials, and ensure business alignment for GMF and GM Public Policy stakeholders
  • Support creation of public affairs engagement opportunities in Texas and other regions with a significant company employment footprint and/or nuanced compliance/regulatory environments
  • Create educational, advocacy-based and/or promotional strategies and related content to support KEYS and community engagement initiatives
  • Support company’s public affairs program by conducting background research and leading development of briefing materials for select industry groups and key policy stakeholders
  • Write and edit media materials, including press releases, talking points, media advisories, etc, and lead review processes with senior-level leadership
  • Conduct background research including news topics and journalist interests to support pitches
  • Monitor media coverage and proactively identify opportunistic communication opportunities, creating media coverage reports when necessary
  • Demonstrate teamwork to help promote an ego-free, creative culture
  • Manage deadlines and priorities for multiple projects simultaneously
  • Establish and maintain procedures and processes to ensure that communication activities are carried out in a consistent and efficient manner in accordance with company commitments and corporate standards
  • Assist with other marketing events and initiatives as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Conform with all company policies and procedures



  • Advanced understanding of federal, state and local political landscape and issues
  • Highly developed understanding of media relations tools, techniques and best practices
  • Advanced proficiency in developing media relations and corporate communications materials
  • Experience in crisis communication, media training and executive communications
  • Experience with media distribution platforms (ie, Business Wire, PR Newswire, etc)
  • Knowledge of AP style


  • Excellent written communication and verbal/presentation skills, including writing for online outlets and print publications and use of AP Style
  • Ability to work on projects with a high level of autonomy, demonstrate leadership ability and build relationships
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet multiple deadlines while working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Highly-honed editing ability (both content and copy editing)

Additional Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in financial or automotive industries a plus


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications, Marketing, Journalism or related discipline; or equivalent work experience required


  • 5-7 years in government relations, government affairs, and/or federal or state level lobbying, and/or agency media relations or journalism experience required
