Job Summary:
Responsible for building and maintaining a positive image and reputation for Cox with key constituents by managing and supporting Government and Public Affairs strategies and tactics with a special emphasis on government affairs support, community relations, communications, employee engagement and event coordination in Santa Barbara as well as support to all Cox markets within California (San Diego, Santa Barbara, Orange County/Palos Verdes). Develops and implements programs that positively impact the community and reflect well on the company.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Supports local, state, and national government affairs initiatives to protect the company from legislative/regulatory risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Responsible for supporting company and regional goals regarding Connect2Compete and other affordability and adoption programs in the Santa Barbara market. Identifies program and partner opportunities, coordinates and attends events, and tracks and shares program success.
  • Acts as a liaison between Cox and local government, cities, chambers, nonprofit organizations, community, and private-sector partners to assess the organization’s needs and match Cox’s resources to those needs.
  • Responsible for Santa Barbara efforts to meet FCC compliance on Public Inspection Files and serves as a contact for the Public Inspection Files.
  • Assists leadership with identifying and researching public policy issues to enable the company to take proactive positions on issues.  Resources include monitoring relevant Internet sites, blogs, trade publications and other news sources.
  • Develops and manages municipal relationships and provides system updates and topical briefings to local officials as directed.
  • As directed by leadership, may represent and advocate on Cox’s behalf before external groups.
  • Assists with external community and communications activities that provide valuable support to important local causes and organizations; helps support a positive company image as a strong community partner; supports the company’s business goals; and showcases/raises awareness of Cox’s residential and commercial products and services.
  • Provides support with content for print and electronic communications to promote and support Public and Government Affairs and the Cox Charities Foundation. This may include photography support, written articles, FAQs, press releases, ad copy, run of show, talking points and program ads.
  • Supports planning and implementation of internal and external Government and Public Affairs initiatives, programs, and events, including volunteer programs. Works closely with department leadership, the Santa Barbara Market Vice President, and other team members to provide logistical support, recruit volunteers, manage invitations & RSVPs, coordinate with facilities/venue and other vendors, and associated reporting.
  • Provides support for Cox Charities Foundation programs and initiatives including board meetings, membership drives, scholarship programs, nonprofit grants and other Foundation initiatives. Facilitates Foundation and employee meetings. Assists in the daily management of Cox Charities website.
  • Coordinates and responds to grant requests from nonprofit organizations and manages follow-up communications. Serves as a point of contact with customers, public & internal business partners inquiring about sponsorships and community programs.
  • Executes plans and opportunities that benefit Cox Business, Marketing, Sales, and other business development prospects; cultivates relationships, and coordinates internal resources to increase revenue.
  • Organizes local involvement in broad company initiatives including but not limited to youth and education, technology and broadband adoption, diversity, inclusion, and conservation.  Represents the company at public, social, and business gatherings when needed. May include public speaking opportunities.
  • Coordinates the monthly cross-channel public service announcement inventory and schedule and works with internal and external partners to maximize the asset opportunity.
  • Responsible for coordinating hospitality opportunities in the Santa Barbara market, managing Public Affairs records, databases, and contacts, and fulfilling various reporting requirements.
  • Various other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Where permitted by applicable law, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to be considered for this U.S. based job.  (Reasonable accommodations for medical and religious objections will be considered.)
  • 2+ years of experience required in related field (i.e. Public Affairs, Government Affairs, etc.)
  • Must have strong communication, writing, verbal and presentation skills
  • Requires strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Strong detail orientation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a state-wide, cross-functional team
  • Requires flexible schedule to attend meetings/events in mornings, evenings and some weekends.
  • Must have a clean driving record and be able to travel within the system.

Preferred

  • Spanish speaking preferred.
  • BS/BA degree in related discipline strongly desired (i.e. Marketing, Business, Communications, etc.).
  • 4+ years previous Government and/or Public Affairs experience
  • Skills desired in desktop publishing, presentation, and design tools, including Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as well
