The American Library Association (ALA) is seeking a full-time policy and advocacy professional to join its public policy team in the ALA Washington Office. ALA is the oldest and largest association for library and information professionals in the world, delivering pragmatic solutions to pressing issues such as expanding economic opportunity, advancing education, and learning in the global economy, as well as strengthening individual rights such as privacy and free speech.

We are looking for someone with excellent written and oral communication skills along with a commitment to libraries and an interest in working for a membership organization with strong grassroot networks. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is part of the Public Policy and Advocacy group and will help track and analyze congressional, federal, and legal proposals related to library concerns, and provide research and outreach assistance to the program staff of the ALA Washington Office.

Activities will range from engaging library advocates and supporting lobbying meetings to conducting background research and preparing summaries in varied content areas. Incumbent also provides assistance on preparing presentations, updating webpages, and other comparable activities.

This position has a particular focus on how libraries enable economic opportunity, especially for communities that need help the most.

This is a grant-funded regular full-time position based in our Washington, DC office with two years of funding in place.  Extension beyond two years is dependent on available funding.

ALA staff are currently working remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. We will resume in-person work at ALA offices when it is safe to do so.  Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites.

ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date.

All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check and proof of your eligibility to work in the United States.

Starting Salary:  Negotiable from 50K, based on relevant experience. ALA offers a 35-hour work week, excellent benefit package including low-cost medical/dental insurance, retirement annuity and generous paid vacation.  You may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

  •  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent study that provided opportunities for research and a major or coursework in relevant areas, such as political science, public administration, communications, library/information science, economics/sociology, or other related fields.
  •  Three years related experience that can include internships and/or volunteer service.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, specifically Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize in a dynamic work environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
