The University of Iowa Strategic Communications is seeking a Public Relations Manager to join their team. The most significant key areas of responsibility (KARS) are message development and implementation, public relations, information management, and strategic planning.

 

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic leadership for university-wide news media relations and issues management functions, working under the general executive direction of the assistant vice president for external relations reporting to the director of internal communication and public relations. Coordinate closely with leaders of other departments within the Office of Strategic Communication and campus partners.
  • Manage high-profile, high-risk, and high-opportunity communication initiatives with strategy and message development, serving as institutional spokesperson on key issues.
  • Scan the internal and external environments to identify emerging risks and opportunities to inform strategic communication plans.
  • Provide counsel and assist university leaders on internal messaging to campus, including deans, VPs, and unit leaders.
  • Establish productive and trusting relationships with campus leaders and key sources in all major administrative and academic areas.
  • Prepare key institutional representatives for media interviews, including conducting media training sessions with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Gather, review and analyze data on media relations outcomes; prepare reports as necessary and work closely with directors and staff to apply metrics to improve performance. Knowledge of Cision preferred.
  • Create media coverage plans for specific high-priority events and opportunities and execute/manage the tasks.
  • Assure quality, consistency, integrity, effectiveness, and high ethical standards. Assure compliance with university policy and all relevant laws and regulations (e.g., copyright, privacy, public records, etc.).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) preferably in Business, Marketing, Journalism, Mass Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, English, History or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years (preferably 5) experience working in a professional role in public relations (PR) or a closely-related field (for example: marketing communications, journalism, brand management, advertising, or sales management).
  • Experience leading team projects.
  • Experience in public relations and/or internal communications.
  • Experience anticipating and managing difficult public relations’ issues.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment and/or demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience serving as a media spokesperson in high-pressure, high-risk situations.
  • Supervisory skills, including performance planning and management, and staff development.
  • Track record of building professional relationships with organizational leaders, journalists, and key influencers.
  • Experience in developing strategic, research-based communication plans.
  • Experience in higher education, health care, government, or non-profit organizations.
