The National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU) seeks a Regulatory Affairs Counsel to assist in the development and implementation of the Association’s regulatory policy priorities and to conduct analysis of financial regulations affecting credit unions.  This position reports directly to the Director of Regulatory Affairs.

What you’ll do:

  • Assist in planning and execution of the Association’s advocacy strategy and goals through research and development of NAFCU positions on regulatory issues.
  • Inform NAFCU members of developments in regulatory areas that affect the operation of credit unions and assist members in communicating with federal agencies.
  • Prepare written comments to the regulatory agencies and other policy setting bodies on issues affecting credit union practices; assist in the preparation and distribution of Regulatory Alerts and Final Regulations.
  • Monitor and report to the Association on the activities of the agencies as they relate to federally-insured credit unions; review and assist in updating the NAFCU website with respect to regulatory issues.
  • Maintain relationships with other industry groups and maintain personal networks throughout the federal financial regulatory agencies, quasi-regulatory agencies, and industry groups.
  • Work with the Regulatory Compliance Division to gather member feedback on regulatory issues to inform and guide the Association’s advocacy efforts.
  • Work with the Legislative Affairs Division in drafting and reviewing legislation affecting credit unions.
  • Assist the Communications Division with messaging on regulatory advocacy issues, including reviewing content and speaking with members of the press.
  • Speak before various audiences regarding regulatory issues. While travel and in-person meetings with regulatory agencies currently are limited due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, once restrictions are lifted the counsel may be required to travel both locally and to NAFCU conferences within the U.S.

Position Requirements:

  • Law degree and state or D.C. bar membership required.
  • Background in government affairs, especially on behalf of trade associations, is desired.
  • Prior experience with economics, finance, or business, especially in financial services, is a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, written, and analytical skills.
  • Superior research skills, including computerized research tools and the Internet.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Team player – flexible with respect to multiple priorities and changing circumstances.
  • This position is located in Arlington, Virginia, but will onboard and work remotely due to the pandemic.  This is not a permanently remote position, but a return to the office date has not yet been scheduled.
