What You’ll Be Doing in the role of Specialist
Empowered by our expansive grassroots network, Komen is leading the fight for those impacted by breast cancer locally, in our states and in Washington, D.C. Komen works to identify, through a transparent and broad-based, intensive vetting and selection process, the advocacy issues that have the greatest potential impact on Komen’s mission.
The Specialist, Advocacy Engagement and Training develops, supports, and promotes Komen’s Center for Public Policy’s grassroots advocacy educational and training programs related to breast cancer and health policy. This individual will also support internal/external stakeholders, implementation of routine program logistics, and work closely within the organization to ensure educational programming strengthens Komen’s advocacy base.
What You Will Bring to the Table
Develop, prepare, organize, and evaluate curricula for all educational programs ensuring activities are appropriate and beneficial to advocates.
Develop and implement comprehensive year-round grassroots advocacy strategy, to demonstrate volunteer constituent support for breast cancer related policy initiatives.
Build, nurture, and retain advocates in educational program through recruitment of new and strategic supporters with an emphasis on key congressional districts.
Regularly provides routine program logistics, maintains requirements or activities to ensure quality of programs.
Oversees program development timelines and communicates status internally.
Update course materials, schedules, requirements, and provide information to volunteers/participants.
Maintains constant communication with program participants through email, learning platforms and social media channels.
Closely monitors program participants activities and provides status updates to internal stakeholders on progress of completion.
Oversees identification and recruitment of volunteers to participate in programs.
Actively works to increase program participants and strengthen key programs to enhance our policy impact.
Helps to plan virtual and in person events for program participants.
Tracks and evaluates grassroots related educational programs to ensure successful completion, impact, and growth, and reports metrics to internal and external stakeholders.
Assure that the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of all Center for Public Policy programming is aligned with our mission and policy priorities.
Support development and fundraising activities to expand Komen’s grassroots advocacy capacity and reach.
Promote an organizational culture that values trust, commitment to the mission, scientific integrity, and professional and organizational growth.
Perform other duties as assigned.
We Already Know You Will Also Have
Bachelor’s degree in public policy, public administration, political science, government affairs, training and development or other relevant field and 2-5 years of directly related experience.
Proven ability to run advocate/volunteer training and education programs.
Experience working in the policy and advocacy space.
Prior experience with digital tools and platforms (e.g.LearnUpon, CapitolCanary).
Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required for effective interaction with advocates and volunteers.
Proven ability to work independently and creatively, meeting strict deadlines, in a fast-paced environment.
Solid organizational skills and advanced-level proficiency with MS Office products.
Work Experience: 2 – 5 years
Education: Bachelor’s Degree: Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Government Affairs, Communications
Preferred experience includes:
Master’s degree in public policy, public administration, political science, government affairs, education, training and development or another relevant field.
Working knowledge of the breast cancer policy and advocacy environment.
Travel requirements – Staff/team meetings, Annual Advocacy Summit, and other engagement opportunities and events.
