What you’ll learn & achieve:

Reporting to the Director, Government Affairs – Americas, the Federal & State Government Affairs Lead is responsible for creating and sustaining relationships with relevant stakeholder (State/Provincial and Federal Regulators and/or legislative offices, both in Washington and in the home district/state), and for identifying, tracking, and influencing (federal and state) public policy outcomes that reflect UL’s Alpha Strategy and corporate interests. Increase UL’s enterprise value by delivering timely strategic insights to inform enterprise strategy and collaborating with UL Government Affairs colleagues and subject matter experts to develop and execute advocacy campaigns with coalition partners that deliver meaningful policy solutions.


  • Develop and implement strategies to influence legislation and/or regulation to an optimal outcome for UL and within UL’s public policy framework.
  • Identify, track, analyze and report on political, institutional and public policy (legislation, regulations, Executive Orders, etc) trends and developments at the Federal and State levels.
  • Build and sustain an effective network across key public policy influencers at the Federal and State levels, including coalitions (informed by UL Alpha Strategy and priorities).
  • Maintain (in concert with Issues Operations Management principal) contacts database, automated and manual tracking and reporting framework for issues and policy management, and environmental scans for government pressure points.
  • Participate in critical external fora – meetings, coalitions, associations, and committees – as designated by Director, Government Affairs.
  • Project manages cross-enterprise teams to develop UL responses to the government in line with UL’s public policy framework and policy issue leads.
  • Supports identification, activation, training and deployment of Advocacy Ambassadors in defined advocacy campaigns in support of strategic priorities

What makes you a great fit:

  • University Degree (Preferably an advances degree degree) in Business Administration, Political Science, Government Relations plus generally 10 years’ experience in a government agency (Federal or state) or as a consultant to a government agency is preferred.
  • Organizational and Program/Project Management Skills.
  • Interpersonal Skills and People Management Abilities, exceptional written communication skills and strong presentation abilities, including “storytelling” for presentation and influence.
  • Analytical and problem-solving faculty.
  • Strong planning and execution capabilities.
