Job Description Summary:
The Sr Advisor of Institutional Relations plays a central role in fulfilling the external
engagement and public policy goals of the society by working close to global
institutions, stakeholders, and processes to advance our vision and mission at the
international level.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
 Lead engagement with specific institutions such as IGOs, academia, the technical
community, and civil society. Support the VP, External Engagement in the
engagement with other institutions as needed in support of the organization’s
strategic priorities.
 Support the development and implementation of strategies for ISOC engagement in
International Institutions (IGOs, civil society, technical community) that align with the
strategic direction of the Organization.  Craft ISOC positions, engagement
processes, and other policy activities to implement ISOC’s strategic approach to
International Institutions.
 Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support
multilateral engagements and collaborative activities globally.
 Substantial knowledge of, and experience with, public policy and international
relations issues, in the ICT, and/or Internet sectors and the desire and ability to
maintain that knowledge. Identify, research, track, and analyze issues in Internet
policy. Write, edit, and clear briefing documents, papers, reports, talking points,
presentations/speeches, correspondence, and other materials to advance policy
 Be able to work effectively with a broad spectrum of people and groups, including
national governments, national and international standards, public policy
organizations, civil society, and private sector groups in a manner that maintains the
high standards of the Society. Represent the Internet Society professionally and
tactfully in meetings, policy discussions, and other events. Help build new relations
that leverage ISOC’s agenda.
 Show proficiency in working in a multicultural, global environment and coordinating
closely with various teams within ISOC. Work closely with RVPs and PLs to

maximize opportunities to position the organization globally and advance ISOC
initiatives and projects.
 Show autonomy and leadership in managing activities with a strategic and tactical
impact. Conduct strategy development and project management for engagement
initiatives and activities, including developing plans and schedules, identifying
resources, managing execution and follow-up, monitoring expenditures, and
coordinating with staff and experts around the globe to achieve objectives.
 Strategically work in collaboration with projects and initiatives to achieve the
organization’s goals and objectives.
 Work as needed with the Partnerships team to facilitate relations with new partners
and sponsors.
 Other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications:
 Master-level qualification in International Relations or related field. Additional
qualifications in Information Sciences or Technology would be an asset.
 Experience in working with international intergovernmental, non-profit or corporate
 Experience and confidence are necessary to represent the Internet Society
effectively and professionally in international public policy forums.
 Capacity to work in a multicultural environment and to work effectively across
different departments.
 The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English is a must. Proficiency in
at least one additional language is desirable.
 Minimum of three (3) years of relevant public policy experience (as per above).
 Familiarity and comfort with Internet-based communication and work tools and
working in active online communication environments.
 Must be able to build consensus online.
 The willingness and ability to travel extensively.
 Commitment to the Internet Society’s mission, values, and objectives.
 Experience working with a Globally distributed workforce and ability to work across
time zones.
 Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact positively in a multicultural
and multidisciplinary environment.
 Ability to travel as needed.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
