AF&PA is seeking a strategic leader to develop and implement industry strategies and policies around energy and environmental issues including water and climate. The selected person will also provide leadership for AF&PA’s Better Practices, Better Planet sustainability program. This position requires a proactive self-starter and active listener/learner adept at developing consensus among colleagues and members to help policymakers solve complex policy challenges.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

    • Develop a thorough knowledge of current water and energy/climate policies, as well as sustainability, and future trends. 
    • Develop and implement water strategies and policies pertaining to federal agencies and support government affairs staff on water legislation.    
    • Staff the Water Resources Subcommittee, including developing and implementing budgets, and running meetings.
    • Advance AF&PA policy priorities, by actively participating in a national water quality coalition. 
    • Develop and implement energy  strategies and policies. 
    • Analyze, report on, and respond to energy  initiatives, and support government affairs staff on energy legislation.
    • Staff the Energy Policy Committee, including developing and implementing budgets, and running meetings. 
    • Actively participate in the development and implementation of climate and biomass strategies and policies.

 

  • Lead AF&PA’s sustainability team on the implementation of new 2030 goals.
  • Lead the team’s development of periodic sustainability reports.

 

  • Anticipate and work with a member sustainability executives committee on issues or policies requiring member consensus.
  • Work with AF&PA’s communications team to position the industry as a leader in sustainability.
  • Serve as a representative of the AF&PA before federal agencies, Congress, and state legislatures and agencies.
  • Work with members and AF&PA team to ensure all industry sectors’ views are considered and incorporated.
  • Help ensure the association is communicating consistently to its various committees and sectors.
  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of the association-wide policies, procedures, and messages.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:

 

  • Proactive self-starter, who is an active listener and learner, consensus-builder, and outcome-oriented. 
  • Experience and knowledge of policy and technical aspects of environmental, energy and sustainability issues and laws.
  • Ability to identify assignments needing attention and capable of taking a leadership role within AF&PA and other coalitions. 
  • Ability to work on interdisciplinary teams with minimal oversight.
  • Exceptional organization skills and ability to manage multiple, high priority tasks.  
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills with an ability to speak in front of multiple audiences.
  • Ability to work in AF&PA’s Washington, DC office

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, natural resource management, environmental policy, political science, or equivalent field preferred.  
  • Advanced degree in public policy, law, government or related field with a specialty in environmental policy preferred. 
  • 15+ years experience with regulatory environmental issues including advocacy, technical and economic analyses, and filing public comments on agency rulemakings. 
  • Experience with trade association dynamics preferred.
