Position Description

The Cancer Support Community (CSC), the largest nonprofit provider of social and emotional support for people affected by cancer, is seeking a Senior Director to serve in a leadership position focusing on Congress and state legislatures. Grounded in the mission to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community, the aim of the Cancer Policy Institute (CPI) is to ensure that all people affected by cancer have access to quality, evidence-based care that includes both medical and psychosocial care throughout the cancer continuum. The individual selected for this role will be a self-starter, experienced in public policy and committed to fulfilling the mission of CSC.  This individual will report to the Executive Director of the Cancer Policy Institute.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Executive Director of the Cancer Policy Institute on the overall strategy of the Institute
  • Lead in the development and implementation of CSC’s legislative agenda at federal and state levels
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Senior Director (focused on regulatory issues) to integrate legislative priorities
  • Work with Members of Congress, state legislators, and other decision makers to communicate CPI priorities
  • Secure and grow relationships with policymakers across multiple sectors
  • Work with the Executive Director, CPI, Board of Directors Policy Committee, and CPI Advisory Committee to determine CSC actions
  • Secure short and long-term funding for the Institute
  • Conduct strategic policy analysis, research issues and draft reports (both informational and instructional) for internal and external distribution
  • Draft memos, briefs, letters and other CPI documents
  • Support and identify opportunities for innovative partnerships with the public and private sectors, academia and government agencies to advance CSC projects and services
  • Engage and coordinate with CSC’s national partners to identify areas of common work and consensus, and to advocate collectively for positive change for people affected by cancer
  • Effectively disseminate methodology and results of CSC projects and services with the goal of influencing state and national policy and practices
  • Support the coordination of state-based strategies
  • Assist in representing the CPI by interfacing with policymakers, fellow advocates, funders, corporate partners and media outlets
  • Prepare Cancer Policy Institute reports and briefings for internal and external audiences (e.g., contribution to the CSC annual report, donor reports, newsletter updates, etc.)
  • Lead activities around affiliate training, Hill Briefings, quarterly educational workshops and other offerings
  • Represent CSC and the CPI at external meeting and events
  • Other duties as assigned

SPECIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-8 years of experience in public policy, public interest law or related field, as exhibited by extensive experience in working with state and federal policymakers, national partners, advocacy groups, and constituents
  • Experience working with multiple and diverse partners, including but not limited to policymakers and their staff, service providers, business leaders, advocates, community organizers, field experts, funders, employers and the media
  • Strong project management and performance measurement skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including  public speaking ability
  • Solid problem-solving and effective time management skills
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop trusting, productive relationships with staff, partners and donors
  • Cross-functional team player
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to adhere to tight timetables
  • Conducts all work in an ethical, honest, and professional manner
  • Ability to work extended hours as necessary to accomplish goals and meet deadlines
  • Willing to travel up to 25% of the time
  • Exercises high degree of discretion and diplomacy in dealing with confidential or sensitive matters and materials
  • Self-motivated, self-starting, team driven, customer service oriented, and a creative thinker
  • Valid driver’s license
