Senior Director, Public Affairs, Global Therapeutic Area Communications, Remdesivir

Reporting to the VP of Public Affairs, Global Therapeutic Area Communications, this role will lead global communications for remdesivir, Gilead’s investigational treatment for COVID-19. The person in this newly-created position is responsible for proactively shaping understanding of Gilead’s role in the global efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic with the ongoing development of remdesivir, and the significant care and responsibility that underpins all our actions as we work to bring remdesivir to appropriate patients in need around the world. This role works closely with Clinical Development, Government Affairs, Global Medical Affairs and Commercial Product Strategy, and engages colleagues across Public Affairs’ global centers of expertise and regional/country teams.

Position Description

This role is a full-time position leading global communications for remdesivir. Given the high-profile nature of this work and the significant involvement of leadership in Foster City, the role requires being consistently available during a significant portion of the work day for California.

Responsibilities include:

Engage with leaders in Global Commercial Product Strategy, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs, Government Affairs, Regulatory Affairs and Legal as part of key cross-functional teams to drive strategy and tactical plans that shape understanding of the value of remdesivir and Gilead’s comprehensive efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic

Integrate information from across the organization to ensure a comprehensive narrative on Gilead’s efforts can be communicated to external and internal audiences in a compelling and consistent way

Lead cross-functional efforts to horizon scan and proactively address emerging issues

Support product introductions around the world, with globally aligned messages and outreach

Inform priorities and collaborate on programs related to remdesivir/COVID-19 in other Public Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, community engagement and corporate giving. Programs may include corporate website and intranet content development, advocacy group engagement, funding opportunity announcements, among others

Maintain relationships with key top-tier and trade reporters to shape reporting on remdesivir

Manage PR agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement programs in compliance with Gilead’s business conduct policies

Manage budgets to target, ensuring appropriate investment in priority work and identifying ways to optimize resources

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 15+ years of relevant experience in healthcare communications

Demonstrated experience driving communications plans that support business priorities

Expertise in media relations and issues management

Ability to interact with senior management, academic experts and patient advocates appropriately, with confidence and ease

Ability to influence others and drive alignment across diverse teams

A passion for engaging in public health and policy issues

Adept at understanding scientific data. Prior experience in infectious disease communications is preferred

Understanding of the US market access environment is required. Experience working outside of the US is a plus

Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company
