Senior Federal Policy Advisor

Mercy for Animals
Remote (DC)

Mercy For Animals aims to construct a compassionate food system by reducing suffering and ending the exploitation of animals for food. We envision a world where animals are respected, protected, and free to pursue their own interests.

As a leading farmed animal advocacy organization, we know that achieving this goal requires a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment—one that welcomes and sparks new perspectives and innovative ideas. If you are passionate about our mission, driven to make a big impact for animals, and eager to be part of a dedicated team, join us to help spread compassion around the globe.

Currently, Mercy For Animals is looking for a senior federal policy advisor.

As senior federal policy advisor, you will identify opportunities and partner with the director of government affairs on strategies for driving U.S. federal policy change that will help create a more compassionate food system.

You will do invaluable work:

  • Identify opportunities and develop strategies that further Mercy For Animals’ legislative and regulatory objectives, specifically at the federal level
  • Create campaign plans through research and analysis, and implement, monitor, and modify them as necessary to achieve objectives
  • Lobby at the federal level, working with legislators and regulatory agencies to advance policy initiatives
  • Manage contract lobbyists to ensure they deliver results aligned with Mercy For Animals’ mission
  • Draft persuasive correspondence, fact sheets, op-eds, and testimony
  • Build, manage, and lead diverse coalitions, including those with political organizations and associations not traditionally involved in animal protection, to expand support for Mercy For Animals’ legislative priorities
  • Foster bipartisan relationships with individuals, institutions, and organizations to positively influence and gain support for initiatives
  • Ensure Mercy For Animals’ compliance with state and federal laws regarding lobbying and lobbyist registration
  • Adhere to all people operations and administrative policies and procedures
  • Perform any other duties assigned

Your qualifications will take our government affairs department to the next level:

  • Minimum five years’ experience (seven preferred) working with elected officials, specifically at the federal level, to advance a legislative agenda
  • Deep understanding of U.S. congressional and cabinet policymaking processes and the role of think tanks, associations, and NGOs, with a proven ability to develop and implement strategies to influence these processes
  • Established relationships with senior staff of key congressional decision-makers
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both Republican and Democratic members of Congress and their staff
  • Ability to analyze issues, formulate arguments, and succinctly communicate complex concepts at the highest level of U.S. government
  • Good judgment and strong political acumen, with the ability to identify and influence critical legislators, mobilize allies, and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ability to anticipate emerging issues, prioritize and balance competing issues, and direct resources accordingly
  • High level of integrity and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships
  • Experience building diverse coalitions, leveraging networks, and finding common ground among stakeholders with different perspectives and priorities
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple issues of varying complexity while meeting deadlines with deliverables
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the organization
  • Willingness to travel
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Commitment and openness to continued personal and organizational growth in principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice

Is this the right fit? Absolutely, if this sounds like you:

I’m a highly motivated, well-connected government affairs professional, with a wealth of political knowledge and exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills. I enjoy collaborating, thrive under pressure and deadlines, and manage time and resources effectively. Fiercely passionate about animal welfare initiatives and Mercy For Animals’ mission, I am determined to think creatively and strategically about how to advance this mission through federal policy.

About Your Team Leader

Your team leader, the director of government affairs in the United States, joined Mercy For Animals in July 2019 after careers in litigation and state and local lobbying. She has a deep understanding of the law and legislative policy work. A lifelong animal lover, environmentalist, and social justice activist, she believes we will not create a more compassionate food system without an intersectional and inclusive movement. She values ambition, encourages out-of-the-box thinking, and believes a whiteboard is the secret to any successful brainstorming session. Your team leader shares her home office with a motley crew of pit bulls and foster dogs and apologizes in advance for background noise.

Compensation and Benefits

Earn an annual salary of $82,000–$88,000, depending on qualifications, and enjoy a commute-free life as a remote team member. In addition to a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will be able to take part in our benefits package, including no- or low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; generous paid time off and sick leave; and a 401(k) retirement plan, with a dollar-to-dollar employer match of up to 3 percent of your annual salary.

Application Details

We consider traditional and nontraditional qualifications and carefully review each application, resume, and cover letter. Feel encouraged to go outside the norm of a traditional cover letter and state how you would add to our culture; what we would gain from having you on our team; and how you align with our organizational vision, mission, and values.

Our Commitment to You

Mercy For Animals is a globally minded organization. We are committed to the principles of equity and justice, and our culture celebrates authenticity, enabling every team member to shine. All employment decisions are based solely on individual qualifications, job needs, and job requirements, and potential team members of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, veteran status, and ability are encouraged to apply. We strive to include and encourage candidates from historically marginalized communities and those from or in communities impacted by environmental, social, and economic injustice.

Come as you are, and help us transform our society and construct a truly compassionate food system.
