IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Manager, Communications on the Global Impact Group (GIG) team. The GIG team serves IHME’s vision of all people living long lives in full health through cutting-edge communication and collaboration. GIG runs campaigns to amplify awareness of the most critical health challenges, and works with scientists and decision-makers to strengthen the evidence base of research and to take informed action. Within GIG, the Global Campaigns team works with media and social media, creating compelling content to help IHME advance policy windows by furnishing evidence in order to inform decision-making.

We are seeking a Senior Manager of traditional and social media to help achieve IHME’s mission by strategically managing and setting priorities for our coordinated marketing and communications strategy in order to build impact from IHME research among audiences globally. The Senior Manager will be a globally savvy leader who is skilled at strategically managing and expanding a dynamic and expert team of digital communication officers, content generators, and media relations officers. They will be responsible for proactively identifying, creating, and disseminating high-quality stories and content that demonstrate the policy-relevance of IHME’s results and methods in clear and compelling ways, while also managing and mentoring employees with their own portfolios of work.



  • Supervise a team of highly skilled individuals by assigning work hours, managing workflow, priority setting, and monitoring progress.
  • Train team members, providing guidance, coaching and support, and course-correcting guidance when necessary.
  • Ensure the team delivers to the highest standards of the organization.
  • Identify and foster opportunities to advance individuals’ knowledge and abilities.
  • Ensure the team works effectively with other groups at IHME, promoting cross-organization teamwork.
  • Assess and map project deliverables to resource needs.
  • Advise on short- and long-term team structure including providing input on recruitments.

Management and Strategic Planning

  • Develop structures and systems to support a global team and to facilitate the rapid flow of relevant information.
  • Cultivate and oversee a portfolio of coordinated marketing and communication strategies across traditional and social media to develop the Institute brand; develop and evolve a strategy for each, including scoping, resourcing, and formalizing partnerships, and monitoring and measuring progress toward deliverables.
  • Monitor and assess risks related to IHME’s reputation and work across a variety of national contexts and provide guidance to IHME leadership to minimize such risks.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify strategic opportunities by reviewing the landscape of marketing and communications on a range of health and global development topics and develop strategic plans for IHME’s work to be woven into the global dialogue.

Media Relations

  • Strategically manage and expand IHME’s network of media contacts, key opinion leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders; identify and lead opportunities to strengthen relationships with external media stakeholders in order to disseminate IHME’s evidence-based research effectively and seek to influence global health policy and impact.
  • Field and obtain answers to inquiries and requests from journalists for findings and interviews with experts in IHME’s research network.
  • Communicate collaboratively and effectively with other members of the IHME’s GIG team, as well as other faculty and staff, key communications staff at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and other stakeholders to engage IHME’s growing research network in working with the media to explain research findings.

Content Generation

  • Research and write content for outreach products, which include messaging briefs, fact sheets, press releases, media pitches, infographics, and social media-related content.
  • Work with faculty and staff to transform complex research into compelling and policy-relevant messages that are comprehensible to targeted non-scientific audiences.
  • In all avenues, communicate to diverse audiences in a language and manner that connects with their interests while explaining in clear terms IHME’s work and mission.

Knowledge Command

  • Develop and deploy a comprehensive understanding of the key concepts, methods, inputs, results, messages, and future implications of IHME’s research portfolio, and key issues in population health.
  • Develop and deploy a comprehensive understanding of marketing, communications, and technology strategies at peer organizations and partner organizations, including their political and cultural contexts.
  • Develop in-depth familiarity with media organizations and journalists around the world, including their political and cultural contexts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, social sciences, science, or related field plus at least six years of experience in communications, creative production, or media relations role.
  • At least five years of supervisory experience with an ability to lead people, develop high performers, make staff-related decisions, and resolve conflicts.

  • Ability to operate in and analyze a multi-stakeholder environment to facilitate the timely flow of relevant contextual information with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of media relations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content marketing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media.
  • Demonstrated success with project management, including a demonstrated ability to manage a large portfolio of priorities, creatively solve problems, and reliably meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex collaborations and representing organizations across diverse social, culture, and political contexts including understanding political sensitivities, devising diplomatic and tactical approaches, adapting to organizational norms in a variety of settings, negotiating, influencing outcomes, and building rapport quickly.
  • Superior communication skills with the ability to adjust message and tone for a variety of audiences to communicate clearly, professionally, and diplomatically.
  • Superior interpersonal skills: observant, perceptive, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Prior experience using tools like Google Analytics, media monitoring software, and customer relationship management systems.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • Prior experience transforming statistical information into compelling written and spoken content targeted at a general audience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of global health.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of development issues.


  • This position is open to anyone authorized to work in the U.S. The UW is not able to sponsor visas for staff positions.
  • This position leads as a global team and works with global audiences and stakeholders; as such evening and weekend work may be required to fulfill job duties.
  • International and domestic travel may be required up to 30% of the time.
  • Valid passport or the ability to obtain one is required.
  • Office is located in Seattle, Washington. This position is eligible to work fully remote in the U.S.; work schedule required to overlap 50% of IHME office hours, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
  • This position is contingent on project funding.
