The Senior Communications Manager is a full-time employee of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) and reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications. He/she is responsible for the creative development and implementation of all GSGLA communications efforts. In collaboration with the marketing and communications team, this function will span internal and external communications; marketing communications; media relations; public affairs and public relations; crisis and reputation management; and content management for internal and external web-based properties and social media channels. She/he will play a role in the External Relations management team and will be responsible for developing consistent and cohesive messaging across departments.
Responsibilities include: 1) Position the organization as the preeminent organization for girls and young women grades K-12 across all communication media. Cultivate and steward strong external relationships with industry professionals to ensure active and timely GSGLA media opportunities , 2) Utilize expertise and experience to manage, oversee, and align consistent and cohesive GSGLA messaging both internally and externally; and maintain alignment with the GSUSA brand voice, 3) Lead the broader community of GSGLA as a visionary communications expert – provide all resources necessary to ensure that the External Relations division, greater GSGLA staff, and volunteers (when applicable) speak with one voice that demonstrates that the Girl Scouts Movement advocates for female ambition by supporting all girls.
Manage the Communications Specialist and Digital Content Specialist and ensure the highest standards of job performance and behavior standards as aligned with the broader goals of the Marketing and Communications Department, the External Relations Division, and the GSGLA community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1) Position the organization as the preeminent organization for girls and young women grades K-12 across all communication media. Cultivate and steward strong external relationships with industry professionals to ensure active and timely GSGLA media opportunities. Public relations strategies include:
- Develop compelling brand and data-driven stories and consumer campaigns that resonate with target audiences
- Drive brand development and storytelling across public relations and content vehicles
- Build a broad understanding of the Girl Scouts program in order to demonstrate expertise with the media
- Train the Executive Leadership, staff, and volunteers as needed so that they too can maintain a strong media presence as experts in the Girl Scouts Movement
- Understand and interpret how Girl Scouts benefits girls and address this knowledge in brand and communications strategies
- Identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration with other organizations as related to brand and communications strategies
- Support promotion of cultivation and stewardship GSGLA events, with a special focus on creating media but through relevant storytelling and outcome-oriented messaging
- Actively create media opportunities and arrange interviews with the CEO, CERO, girls, troops, volunteers, etc.
- Maintain a media database, corporate marketing contact database, and media tracking
2) Utilize expertise and experience to manage, oversee, and align consistent and cohesive GSGLA messaging both internally and externally; and maintain alignment with the GSUSA brand voice.
- Develop, manage, and execute an annual strategic communications plan for GSGLA to span across all communication media (online and offline) and reach appropriate target audiences, based upon specific performance goals. Evaluate the success of various strategies and provide and implement recommendations for improvement.
- Proactively provide innovation across all communication vehicles that GSGLA uses (offline and online) and provide competitive insight into GSGLA communications and branding strategies
- Develop and maintain council messaging for all divisions of the organization, in particular implementing key national campaigns and efforts into local campaigns, communication, and culture
3) Lead the broader community of GSGLA as a visionary communications expert – provide all resources necessary to ensure that the External Relations division, greater GSGLA staff, and volunteers (when applicable) speak with one voice that demonstrates that the Girl Scouts Movement advocates for female ambition by supporting all girls.
- Write interesting and effective content for use across all communication channels. Individually responsible for press releases, media kits and related collaterals
- Oversee the audit and analyzation of GSGLA’s communication efforts, ensuring use of the brand voice
- Oversee the development of and messaging that create a cohesive brand and message for print and all offline communication vehicles
Oversee the development and maintenance of all online communication vehicles, including but not limited to:
- GSGLA website and related microsites
- Social media channels
- Email publications and communication
- Actively provide strategic leadership among the External Relations divisions staff, serve as division representative on event and department committees as needed
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Marketing and Communications
Skill, Experience & Education
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field
- 7-10 years of demonstrated, progressive experience in public/media relations, communications, and/or marketing
- Current and active relationships with LA-based media strongly desired
- Knowledge of MailChimp, Google Analytics, Cision (or similar applications)
- Knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Excellent business acumen and broad experience/understanding of all facets of marketing and communication
- Proven ability to successfully handle multiple projects and meet critical deadlines
- Ability to lead others in a goal and action-oriented manner
- Excellent organization and project management skills
- Outstanding editing, proofreading and written and oral communication skills
- Strong analytical thinking, problem solving skills and communications skills (both written and oral)
- Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to relationship-building for the organization
- Results-oriented and a passion for creativity
- Flexibility to attend evening and/or weekend meetings and/or events
- Dedication to customer service in all interaction, understanding and experience in volunteer environment
- Effective decision making with a high level of personal integrity and professionalism
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Expressions (or similar software) a plus
- Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, a plus
- HTML, CMS, email marketing, print production and web development skills a plus
- Non-profit experience; experience in Girl Scout organization a plus
- Valid California driver’s license, vehicle in working condition, proof of insurance and the ability to fulfill timely and extensive travel requirements across a large geographical area
- Able to pass a criminal background check

The incumbent is in a non-confined office-type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will. The environment for this position is mostly clean and comfortable but may include some minor annoyances such as noise, odors, drafts, etc. In the course of performing this work, the incumbent:
- Will spend time sitting, utilizing the computer.
- Will spend time standing/walking throughout the facilities.
- Must travel via personal vehicle or public transport to various facilities throughout the region.
- May lift up to 15 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
